Another instance of faulty FireWire drive power supplies causing problems

CNET staff

We previously noted that faulty power supplies/adapters for some external FireWire drives can cause issues with spontaneous unmounting, inability to mount at all, or inability to unmount.

We've since received additional reports from users who found that virtually all of their drive issues were resolved by obtaining a new power supply/adapter.

MacFixIt reader Carrick Patterson writes:

"I was having big problems with my LaCie d2 Big Disk Extreme (FireWire). I thought it was due to a system or security update. I have determined, by switching parts around with another disk, that the problem actually follows the wall wart power supply. I have ordered a replacement. I wonder if this could have any relevance to other folks who have reported FireWire problems."
