An easy iPod fix -- switch ports

An easy iPod fix -- switch ports

CNET staff

As previously noted in our coverage of iPod Updater 2005-09-23, switching ports -- FireWire to another FireWire, USB to another USB, FireWire to USB or vice versa -- can sometimes result in a non-synchronizing or otherwise seemingly defunct iPod successfully being recognized by iTunes and transferring data.

One reader writes:

"I also had problems after using the iPod updater on a first generation iPod. [...] I have a Wallstreet laptop and I moved the FireWire cable to the bottom slot and then all my music copied over with out any problems."

MacFixIt reader Mark Stern adds:

"I've got a 30GB iPod (3G) which I use with a dual 1Gig Quicksilver G4. iTunes won't recognize my iPod (resulting in a freeze) if I use the upper Firewire port to try to sync. If I use the lower Firewire port, I have no trouble. It has basically been like this since I got the iPod, about 2 years ago. There are no other indications of Firewire problems."

If you have had similar success, please let us know.
