ALERT: Possible fix for constant disconnects from PowerBooks

ALERT: Possible fix for constant disconnects from PowerBooks

CNET staff

We previously documented a number of recurring dial-up disconnects in various PowerBook models - particularly the PowerBook G4 12". We also previously noted a "shock" that some readers were experiencing when making physical skin contact with their PowerBook. It now seems that the two issues may be related. A reader writes:

"For some time now, while using my PowerBook with the external Power Supply, (the new White one, I'm not sure if the same applies to the original Round Silver ones), I was constantly aware of a slight 'tingle every time I touched my PowerBook."

"As it turns out, the chassis of my PowerBook is "live" from an electrical standpoint, although technicians from Apple assure me this is not possible.

"After connecting an external 'Grounding' wire to my PowerBook, via the External Monitor socket's mounting nuts, or anything metal on the rear sockets panel, all is now well. No more 'tingles' of current running through my hands every time I touched the 'touchpad' etc. and most importantly, no more disconnects."

If you are experiencing PowerBook modem disconnects, try this test:

Pick up your phone and dial a single number (this will get rid of the dial tone). Then touch your PowerBook with your hand. Do you get a buzzing sound in the phone earpiece? Now connect a grounding wire to your PowerBook. Does the buzzing sound go away? If so, then the electrical disturbance may be causing your disconnect problem.
