Alert! MacMedic: do not use with Mac OS 7.6.1; data loss can occur

CNET staff
From Kelly Leopard (of Total Recall):
"We have been able to isolate a problem that a handful MacMedic users have reported...namely 'My disk is empty!' MacMedic and Mac OS 7.6.1 are not compatible. For whatever reason, MacMedic is not interpreting the 7.6.1 file system properly and is damaging the catalog tree of the disk. If the user creates a MacMedic 'Undo' file, then he/she can restore the Undo file without data loss or further problems. Those without the undo file will have to recover the data using the Emergency Data Recovery feature of MacMedic.

We had been scratching our heads trying to figure out what was going on, considering the extensive testing period that we had been through...but it looks like not enough testing went into versions prior to 8.x... We (and others) have confirmed that MacMedic works fine with OS version 8/8.1, but please advise your readers to not use MacMedic with version 7.6.1 until it is fixed.

A patch will be distributed as soon as it is finished. Details will be posted at our Web site."

A letter we received from Larry Anderson confirms this. After using MacMedic, all files "disappeared" from the drive in Larry's PowerCenter Pro 210 running Mac OS 7.6.1. However, he had no problems using MacMedic on two G3 Macs running Mac OS 8.1. Further, he was able to successfully restore his PowerCenter drive using MacMedic's Undo files.
