AirPort Extreme Update 2007-001 Special Report follow-up (#2): Success with changing wireless security

CNET staff

As described in our wireless troubleshooting tutorial, some wireless connectivity issues can be resolved by toggling the wireless security scheme used on your AirPort Base station or third-party wireless router. Several readers have now reported success with this workaround for problems apparent after applying AirPort Extreme Update 2007-001.

If you are using WEP and having issues, try switching to WPA (or WPA2) and vice versa.

For AirPort Base stations, the toggling can be accomplished using the AirPort Admin Utility (located in Applications/Utilities).

For third-party wireless routers, the setting change can usually be accomplished by accessing the router's configuration page -- open a browser and enter the address 192.168.1.1.

One reader writes:

"I have problems using WEP enabled authentication with 2Wire modems after applying AirPort Extreme Update 2007-001. You have to switch your authentication to WPA. This small change solved all my connection issues."
