AirCard drivers for Mac OS X: maybe if you want 5000 of them

A reader notes that several national cellular carriers (Sprint, Verizon) are to begin offering cellular/internet service with Sierra Wireless AirCard 750's. He wrote the company hoping to discover if OS X drivers were available (or planned) since the PCMCIA II interface is included on all recent PowerBooks. He received the following reply:

"Developing Mac drivers is a non-trivial process. In order to do this, Software Development, Quality Assurance, Technical Support & Continuation Engineering all require significant investments in training and equipment. This is a fact and this requires capital. I suspect that if a party was to step up to the table and commit to a volume purchase in the order 5,000 AirCards that we would seriously examine the possibility of developing drivers for Mac OS X. If you have additional questions, I'd suggest you contact our sales department at 604-232-1496 or sales@sierrawireless.com."
