Regarding our previous coverage of a possible conflict between QuickTime 5 and AfterEffects 5, we have received the official word from Adobe on the matter.

Steve Kilisky (senior product manager for After Effects) informs us that:

Adobe "is not aware of any known issues with QuickTime 5 and AfterEffects 5." Steve confirmed that an Adobe Support Technician did claim that there was a problem here, in replying to Jeff Bernstein. However the Technician was in error.

In any case, the symptoms reported by Jeff Bernstein were resolved after Jeff did a clean install of the Mac OS. Steve speculates the cause may have been beta components of QuickTime 5 that were not deleted when upgrading to the release version of QuickTime 5. Jeff indicates it may have been beta versions of ATI drivers that were the cause.

Pamela Treece (Dynamic Media Product Support Manager for Adobe Systems) further replied:

"First, the reported QuickTime 5 and After Effects 5 incompatibility information from the Adobe Support Technician was absolutely incorrect. I confirmed with both Engineering and QA that there are no known issues with using After Effects 5 and QuickTime 5 together (excepting the OS X Classic and QuickTime 5 render problem). The user was contacted by Tech Support and appears to have had an extension conflict.

Secondly, it is a known issue that After Effects does not work correctly with CarbonLib 1.3.1. The known problems are the one you described and the application hangs after you click OK or Cancel in the alert box that comes up when you try to collapse a layer that has an effect or a mask applied. After Effects 5.0 does work correctly with 1.2.5, which is on our CD."
