Adobe Reader 6.0 constantly re-creates "eBooks" folder; solutions

MacFixIt reader Arne Berglund notes that Adobe Reader 6.0 consistently re-creates an "eBooks" folder in the User/Documents directory, even after the folder has been deleted several times.

"I like to keep my hard drive neat and organized, and noticed a new folder inside my Documents folder today - named eBooks. I assumed that Acrobat Reader created it when I installed it a short while ago. Since I don't use any eBooks, I put it in the trash. Just for confirmation, I opened Acrobat Reader to make sure that it would function without it before emptying the trash, and to my surprise it created a new eBooks folder in the same place.

"It appears that if the eBooks folder can't be found in its default location, a new one is created by Acrobat Reader on startup. I found no way to disable that in the preferences."

UPDATE: Douglas Holley notes that you can avoid the eBooks folder re-creation issue by downloading the stripped down version of Adobe Reader 6.0, instead of the standard full release "If you go to the Adobe Reader 6 download page, under Step 2, there is a checked box to 'download the full version". If you uncheck that box you will get a version of Adobe Reader 6 that does not have the ebooks issue. I had the same problem with ebooks folder until I downloaded the 'lite' version by unchecking 'download the full version' option."

Meanwhile, MacFixIt reader Travis notes that the eBooks folder re-creation can be prevented by removing the plugin within the application itself.

First, show the contents of Adobe Reader 6.0. Then go to Contents-->Plug-ins. There should be a plugin called "eBook.acroplugin". Remove that from the application and then you should no longer have the eBooks folder created. Travis writes "On a side note, if you don't need all the plugins, you can remove a lot of them, which will decrease the time it takes to launch Adobe Reader."

If you have another solution for making this folder cease re-appearing when Adobe Reader 6.0 is launched, please drop us a line at late-breakers@macfixit.com.
