Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft PowerPoint conflict

We are investigating an apparent bug (corroborated in-house) where attempting to launch some Photoshop files from within Microsoft PowerPoint will result in a crash.

"I have been working on some animated GIFs in Photoshop 7 and ImageReady 7 and imported them into a presentation in PowerPoint but when I try to open one of the PSD files I have been working with Photoshop crashes at the opening sequence (when Powerpoint is running).

The only viable workaround we have discovered so far is to delete Adobe Photoshop's preferences, then restart your Mac, and attempt to launch Photoshop. Otherwise the application will crash every time it is started.
