Tech expert Michelle Thatcher grew up surrounded by gadgets and sustained by Tex-Mex cuisine. Life in two major cities--first Chicago, then San Francisco--broadened her culinary horizons beyond meat and cheese, and she's since enjoyed nearly a decade of wining, dining, and cooking up and down the California coast. Though her gadget lust remains, the practicalities of her small kitchen dictate that single-function geegaws never stay around for long.

A few years ago, I downsized from an apartment with a huge, light-filled kitchen to one that was (to put it gently) more compact. Though the change was jarring at first, I've really come to appreciate the forced efficiency of a smaller kitchen.

Still, even this convert is amazed at the compact Instant Kitchen from Hansen Living, which was on display at the recent International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York. The credenza-like unit contains everything you'd need in a kitchen, including an oven, gas jets, electric power, refrigerator, and water. You just hook up the water and electricity and voila--an instant modern kitchen for a studio or other small space.

Like all of Hansen Living's kitchen furniture, the Instant Kitchen is made of solid wood with an eco-friendly finish, and it incorporates touches like drawers with perforated steel bottoms and ergonomic hand cut-outs. As is so often the case with fine furnishings, the actual price of the Instant Kitchen is not published, but contact information can be found at the manufacturer's site.
