50 billionth iOS app downloaded, bloke wins £6,550 gift card

Brandon Ashmore, from Ohio in the US, has just won $10,000 in Apple App Store credit after he downloaded the store's 50 billionth app.

Lucky chap -- Brandon Ashmore, from the sleepy lakeside town of Mentor, Ohio, has just won $10,000 (£6,550) in Apple App Store credit after he downloaded the store's 50 billionth app.

The 50 people who downloaded apps after Brandon's milestone also bagged $500 (£330) gift vouchers.

The 50 billionth app was the game Say the Same Thing, which bizarrely was created by the YouTube-winning band OK Go and turned into an app by Space Inch. It promises "fun word-times with your buddies".

Apple promoted the countdown to the big event with this huge ticker. That'll have to be changed for the next huge milestone, if rumours about Jony Ive banning skeuomorphism come true.

"The App Store completely transformed how people use their mobile devices and created a thriving app ecosystem that has paid out over $9bn to developers," boasted Apple's Eddy Cue. "We're absolutely floored to cross this milestone in less than five years."

Comparable stats for the App Store's rival Google Play are difficult to come by, but the Android store passed the 25 billion download mark in September last year, when iOS was on about 35 billion.

It's thought the Android store is growing faster than the App Store, as 74 per cent of smart phones sold in the first quarter of 2013 being powered by the little green robot. It passed iOS in terms of number of apps available in October last year.
