The developer of BioShock 2 and The Bureau: XCOM Declassified has laid off the majority of its staff, with the remaining staff to be folded into a new 2K studio.
According to a report by Polygon and confirmed by a source known to CNET Australia, game-development studio 2K Marin has laid off a large percentage of its staff, with those remaining to be folded into a new San Francisco Bay Area studio led by former Epic Games and Irrational Games head Rod Fergusson.
It is unknown exactly how many staff were laid off, but reports suggest that the majority of the studio is out the door, and 2K Marin will be closed.
A 2K Marin representative told Polygon, "We can confirm staff reductions at 2K Marin. While these were difficult decisions, we regularly evaluate our development efforts and have decided to reallocate creative resources. Our goal to create world-class video game titles remains unchanged."
Apparently post-project layoffs are quite common in AAA development, but 2K Marin staff had thought another project was in the works for the studio.
The Canberra branch of 2K Marin has been unaffected by the layoffs.
