So you like the new Volkswagen Beetle , but you wish it were a bit more fuel efficient?

If so, you should stay tuned to next week's Chicago Auto Show because that's where VW will be debuting its new 2013 Beetle TDI.

As the name suggests, this new Beetle variant will be powered by one of Volkswagen's TDI engines--and no, unfortunately it's not that TDI engine . The Beetle TDI's power train is essentially a cut-and-paste of the engine that lives beneath the bonnet of the 2012 Golf TDI and 2012 Jetta TDI. The much-loved 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct injected diesel four-banger outputs the same 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque as the sedan and hatchback. No surprises here--at least not until the first fill up, where you'll notice that the Beetle TDI's estimated 29 mpg city and 39 mpg highway fuel economy comes up just a few ticks short of the Golf/Jetta's 30 mpg city and 42 mpg highway ratings.

Pricing hasn't been announced yet. However, if the Jetta and Golf TDI's pricing are any indicator, you can expect an MSRP between $26,000 and $27,000 when VW finally slaps a tag on the 2013 Beetle TDI sometime closer to the summer 2012 launch window.
