IBM press release mentions 2.5 GHz PowerPC 970 processor An IBM press release documents the PowerPC Blade server prototype, which incorporates the PowerPC 970 processor. Of interest is that IBM says the chip is running at speeds ranging from 1.8 GHz - 2.5 Ghz. Previous documents indicated a top speed of 1.8 GHz. More.

Apple's open source opening A BusinessWeek piece notes that with Microsoft buying Virtual PC, which lets Macs run Windows wares, Apple's independence may well rest with programs such as Bochs. "Apple's reliance on Office v.X has dramatically decreased. That's the good news. Unfortunately, the need for a product like Virtual PC has only increased. It provides a key security blanket for people moving from the Windows platform to Macs by allowing them to make the switch gradually." More.

Keeping iPod Exciting A Forbes article looks at various options for extending the functionality of the iPod. "Two that have caught our attention in recent weeks do roughly the same thing. They use FM radio frequencies to let you play the music stored on an iPod over a nearby radio receiver. This solves the problem of playing music from the device on anything other than headphones without the need to buy an extra pair of speakers or negotiate a physical connection between the iPod and, say, a stereo setup." Intel, Marriott make room for Wi-Fi Marriott International and Intel on Thursday announced a campaign to promote high-speed wireless access to the Internet at about 400 hotels in the United States, Canada and several countries in Europe. News.com reports "The marketing campaign will tout the availability of the hugely popular Wi-Fi technology at 400 Marriott, Renaissance, Courtyard, Residence Inn and other hotels in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Canada. Marriott said it already offers Wi-Fi Internet access at more than 200 of its hotels and will add wireless access at an additional 200 this spring." More.

Earthlink to bundle phone and net service EarthLink Inc., the nation's third-largest Internet service provider, is about to become one of the country's smallest telephone companies. The company said on Wednesday it will begin selling a service that allows regular telephone calls over the Internet. " EarthLink said it plans to resell a service from Vonage, a privately held company with more than 10,000 Internet telephone customers, under its own name. Vonage, based in Edison, New Jersey, charges $39.99 a month for a service that allows unlimited calls anywhere in the country using a regular phone." More.
