Anytime Apple releases a major system update is released, expect a number of small probles to crop up. This has been true for the recently released version 10.5.7 update for OS X, and we have covered a variety of the major problems, as well as small problems that may only affect one or two people. Among some of these problems were those with printing where people were experiencing crashes and missing features such as the inability to print to PDF.

These problems are still cropping up and persisting for some people, and in addition to the previously mentioned crashes and PDF not working, some are not able to share their printers.

Apple discussion poster "Steve Davidson" writes:

"Shortly after performing the 10.5.7 update to an Intel iMac, I discovered that it is no longer able to share its USB printer. Local/USB (from the iMac) printing works fine, but other computers find themselves either "Looking for printer name" (when using the same print queue as before), or "Unable to get printer status (Forbidden)!" if creating a new Bonjour printer entry. The print sharing settings all look fine and as before on the iMac."

The problems with crashes and missing features appear to be with the accessibility of files in the print system, and the main fix is to reset the print system. This is true as well for the inability to share printers, making this fix convenient for people with multiple of these printing problems.

To reset the print system, open the "Print & Fax" system preferences and right-click (or control-click) your printer, and choose the "Reset Print System" option. In addition to clearing spool data, caches, and other temporary files, this will also remove your printers so you will have to add them again. Hopefully, this will clear the problems with sharing problems and crashes. In addition, you can also try toggling printer sharing off and on in the "Sharing" system preferences both before and after resetting the print system if you are not able to share your printers after updating to 10.5.7.

For problems with not being able to print to PDF, try the print system reset. This should remove all print-related plist files; however, if it doesn't work, try removing the following files from the /username/Library/Preferences/ folder:

com.apple.print.custompresets.plist
com.apple.PrinterProxy.plist
com.apple.PrintingPrefs.plist

If you are using Adobe Reader and are experiencing this problem with PDFs, try reinstalling the latest version of the software, which is available from here.

UPDATE: changed "options" to "control"; thanks "chris per" :)
