1.9GB limit error on AppleShare: cross-platform issues

CNET staff
Last time, we mentioned that updating to AppleShare 3.5 or later would fix a problem where hard drives that are being shared over a network are listed as having only 1.9GB available when they actually have much more unused space.

Several readers note that the problem remains, even with newer versions of AppleShare software, if your are using a NT server. For example, Jonathan Guthrie writes: "Our NT 4 server with Mac File Services, shares both 4GB and 9GB drives to avariety of Macs. Even using OS 8.1 and AppleShare 3.7.4, the 1.9 GB free space problem still exists."

Josh Liebster writes of a possible solution: "Services for Macintosh on NT Server 4.0 also yield the same problem. However, the MacWindows Tips Web site has the workaround." The fix requires editing the NT's Registry and you must be using Mac OS 7.5 or later. A similar solution is described in Microsoft Support document Q120739. Details are on the MacWindows page, which also lists several other cross-platform tips.
