"The DS712+ is completely useless."
on by dsg1716Pros Looks sleek on your desk.
Cons Everything else.
Summary This unit has been a complete failure from the beginning. It would not allow me to install its OS onto a brand new 2.0 TB hard drive I bought for it. After much aggravation I got the OS installed (onto an old drive I had), but then the DS712+ kept corrupting the files I copied onto it - files that looked fine when opened from other media. Then, after a power failure, the unit told me that the storage volume I had created was "degraded." I deleted the volume and tried to recreate it - nothing worked. So I rebooted it and now I am back to square one - the OS has disappeared from the disks and it will not let me install the OS.
Worst of all, Synology tries to do all customer support by e-mail only - imagine trying to do a step-by-step troubleshoot by e-mail. DAYS pass with no progress. They do offer phone support -- but only from 9am to 5pm, PACIFIC time. So if you live on the east coast and have a job, you basically have to stay home from work to get help.
DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT. -
"The editor has never really installed the synology NAS"
on by villa5067Pros none. Worst gadget ever.
Cons Upload of files is slow. Try and upload files, 1 Gig can take 30 minutes. Not possible to view video in streaming. One must waste hours in the synology forum to get things to work. Not possible to view documents with google docs.
Summary How can editor recomed such a product. This must be worst gadget that I ever purchased considering.

"Very fast!"
on by fed250Pros Fast, DSM has tons of options. It is almost as powerful as a server. Best nas on the market. Expandable for growth.
Cons A little expensive but there was just a recent price drop. No usb 3.0 why??
Summary Great unit for home or business! Not sure why others had so much trouble I have never had an issue at all with Synology products. Has an easy setup wizard process for non techies but if you are a techy there is so much you can unlock with this thing. Hoping they add thunderbolt for next year!

"Synology has a broader feature set than most other NAS."
on by dave@charter.caPros Does one IP camera.
Cons The only con is DN not happy about 1 IP camera.
Summary Most NAS devices do not even do 1 IP camera. I disagree that this goes in THE BAD.
