"Excellent product - reliable and feature rich"
on by jzeislerPros Reliable, quiet, good capacity, great raid selections, runs cool, good performance, tons of features, easy to use for an experienced person, automated spin down saves electricity costs, Mac compatible. I love this system.
Cons A little pricy. Would have liked dual GigE ports, but one has been fine. This is not for a novice, but you don't have to be an expert either. Good middle-ground feature set.
Summary I've had the DS410 since it first came out and have been 100% satisfied. It's quiet, reliable, very good performance (based upon the drives you use), and the user interface is really decent. I am a high-end storage system tech and know these systems well. The feature and functionality in the DS410 can't be beat. There is nothing I've needed that the DS410 hasn't been able to provide. FTP, web server, photo station, etc. My initial reason for purchasing a Synology product was reliability. I had purchased another vendor's product and lost data twice. No hiccups at all with Synology. Software updates are easy and reliable. The box is VERY quiet - another primary requirement for a NAS box for my home-based business.

"Very reliable NAS with a terrific browser based UI"
on by qosmioamitPros -Simple web based UI
-Compatible with most OS
-Easy to install (follow quick install guide and wiki guide available online)
-Quick setup with included software
-Backup software for Windows users and compatible with Time Machine for Mac usersCons -Expensive
-Not all HDD are compatible (be aware of HDD compatibility list)
-Fans are not optimally placed for uniform heat transfer
-Would have liked to have 2 ethernet ports for faster throughputSummary I thought the Synology DS-410 is a great product. It would be awesome if it was a $100 cheaper. However, it definitely lives up to its product description. I am a mac user and I wanted a backup solution for my computer. I have several external HDD attached to my iMac and with 4x 2TB HDD in my DS-410 on a Hybrid RAID, I have about 5.5TB available for backup. The product works great with the time machine and it automatically mounts and dismounts each hour as time machine uses the NAS for its backups. It took about 36 hours to format the HDD and setup the RAID though!
The browser based UI is simply fabulous. It is very simple and easy to follow. I would highly recommend visiting Synology's Support Wiki and read about all compatible HDD, because not all are RAID compatible. It also gives a step by step installation guide and it will definitely make your life simple. The initial HDD install took some time because one has to unscrew and open the NAS to install the HDD but it only took about 10 minutes. All in all, I am happy with my product. I would have been happier if I didn't have to spend as much as $1200 for the NAS and HDDs. -
"The best value-for-money NAS out there"
on by Cap302Pros Speedy, hot disk replacement, easy and powerful setup, rich functionality, compact form factor
Cons Setup is manual and can be largely automated, no USB 3.0
Summary A surprisingly good NAS that over-delivers on my somewhat demanding home needs for storage, backup, hosting and multimedia.
I backup all of my home computers (6 of them, both Windows and Mac OS) onto the the Diskstation on a regular basis and use it to stream photos and HD videos to multiple television sets.
It just works well. Period. -
"Fantastic, easy to setup, tech support superior"
on by rsandbergPros This is my first NAS server. I read the reviews and did my research. Well it was smooth sailing for me so far. Phone support has been great and the web site has more information then I could possible go through.
Cons Have to decide what size drives to put in the server. And how to be ready for the future space needed. I would like a metal lock loop. The server is so small and light, I can stick it any where, and I can see it disappearing if not locked up.
Summary I am very happy with this purchase. It was a little more then I first decided to spend, but I believe I made the right choice. Being able to change hard drives size if the future is important. Most other will not allow it. More and more beta and open source programs are being developed, to turn this NAS server into a very SWEET NAS sever.
