Pros Easy Install, Quite, Good Speed
Cons Power light blinks constantly
Summary I needed some NAS for my home network. Nothing fancy. I already had a DHCP server and really wasn't interested in having an FTP server. The Maxtor hit the mark perfectly.
Out of the box and up and running under 10 minutes. The install guide was fairly accurate, nothing you couldn't figure out. Easy security.
The printer port was a bonus. All I had to do was plug in the USB and I had a printer on-line all the time.
Transferring files back and forth is just limited to the badwidth you have on your network.
Now, if they could just stop the power light from blinking ALL the time, it would be perfect.
Pros Easy to set up, fast read/write, acts like a real server
Cons Haven't found one yet
Summary This NAS is perfect for home or home business use. I used this drive to replace a USB direct-attach external hard drive that was too small and this Maxtor NAS has lived up to expectations. My only problem now is space is running thin! CNET called it "near feature-perfect" and I agree.

Pros Easy installation and helpful tech support
Cons Some software glitches
Summary I operate a small business and find this product meets my needs for storage of our electronic data. The hardware was easy to install into our network. The only glitch was configuring the "SimpleView" software. Tech support, although very willing to assist, was never able to resolve the issue. For reasons unknown to me, after a week or two of operation, the program started to work correctly. Even without SimpleView working correctly, the backups were correct. We have subsequently made changes to the backups and we found the changes were easy to make. I recommend this product for small businesses that need to back up their electronic data, e.g., accounting, payroll, etc. I don't find CNET's Cons' as a issue for our company.
Pros Nice form factor.
Mostly does what it is intended for with one major exception.
Cons Poor customer support (see link).
Does not handle AVI streaming although it advertises DLNA
Cannot turn off iTunes once turned on.
Summary Very poor customer support. Ignores major problems brought to their attention by customers. See http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/message?board.id=mss&thread.id=111&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
Athough it advertises media streaming (including video), it does not stream avi's encoded as DivX or XviD. Only streams MP2.
Once iTunes is selected, you cannot unselect it anymore, only move it from place to place.
CNet rates it as DLNA capable and will stream video. Clearly CNet did not do a thorough job of it.
Pros cheap with nice software
Cons what is the use of unreliable storage
Summary crased - all volumes disappeared - maxtor took days to respond and was little help - volumes reappeared - firmware upgrade to fix problems and volumes disappear - maxtor is not help, volumes can't be found, ad I npow have an expensive and time consuming recovery process.
