Pros - Easy to configure RAID
- Good software
- Great build uality
- Good performance
Cons - It's a bit on the heavy side
Summary We are a small office and we have had endless troubles over the years sharing our primary printer and organizing backups. It has been a nice change with the installation of 5big Network 2. The unit works seamlessly and it's FAST over the nework. We now can easily access the same printer without any of the old headaches and backups are done in the blink of an eye..
Pros Reliable, easy to use.
Cons All good thus far
Summary This is a good and reliable solution for central data storage. We bought it to replace an old server that was quite temperamental. This unit is much easier to manage, and the software is quite user-friendly too. All we had to do was plug it in, set up some folders and permissions, and now everyone's data is backed up and saved to this drive.
Pros failover & load balancing, good value, large capacity, sturdy aluminum body, UPS support, remote access
Cons no comments
Summary We've been using this server for about 6 months. Setting it up was a breeze. Everything was straightforward and easy to understand. The users can access their share of the drive from any location, which is a very useful feature when someone is working remotely or traveling. We have connected it up to the UPS unit, to prevent accidental shutdown in case of power outage. The device has been working as advertised thus far. It has a fantastic aluminum enclosure, great feature set, and good software.
Pros dynamic DNS remote access, easy to install, great concept
Cons a bit heavy
Summary The 5big is very easy to setup and administer. The network setting was set up automatically thanks to dynamic DNS and DHCP/Apipa support. Setting up user accounts and quotas doesn't require any special skills either. Everything can be managed from the user-friendly administrator interface. We've been using this server for almost a year now, and haven't had any issues so far.
Pros Seems to be an inexpensive NAS solution
Cons Drive is incredible unreliable. Our third replacement doesn't work. We bought a new drive which within a week went out. We are sending this third one back. Blinking lights tell little about the function of the drive beyond on/off-working/not working.
Summary We purchased a LaCie 5 Big 10TB drive to use on our network as a media backup. We are a medium size multimedia firm with a staff of 16, software and hardware engineers. We DO NOT RECOMMEND BUYING THIS PRODUCT! Web based management tools tells you very little about what is actual happening to the drive, its functions, and error messages. Telephone support is a joke as it is mostly an inexperienced hire reading from a script with no higher level technical support. We are in the process of trying to get a refund and switching all our LaCies drives, both internally and in our installations over to a more reliable product. Surprising because LaCie drives were very good at one time.
