Pros Setup, user interface, price
Cons DLNA server, unreliable
Summary I had this working for approx 48 hours before the error light started flashing. Buffalo customer services said it was an internal fan error so it had to be returned. However that's not my main complaint! I bought this for the inbuilt DLNA media server which lets you share media around your house particularly through the PS3. It worked but when the media server was switched on (always) in my case the drive is always working, like its writing to the hd or rendering. When i say always i mean non stop! It is very annoying and cant be good for the drive. Buffalo were aware of the problem and advised me to 'turn the DLNA server off' and the noise would stop and resolve the problem!!! I explained that i bought the drive because of the key selling point the server and they said it was normal. I can assure you it is not normal. My old Iomega drive did not do this.
Anyway refund received, Buffalo have some work to do....
Pros Great Print server
Easy to use
Cons Slow Hard Drive
Claims DLNA certified to stream to DLNA certified devices, but does not for most devices (so not really DLNA?)
Summary The Good:
Print server is definitely nice, and extremely compatible! I bought a print server for one of my friends, and their HP Printer would not work. The web interface is clean and easy to use, while giving you easy access to all the features. Also, your buffalo server is accessible through a web portal Buffalo has, all you need to do is turn it on on the device and register. Overall, can't complain for $110 server after 8 months.
As stated, it is definitely a bit on the slow side. Also, never leave the PC Cast/Media Streaming on because the unit CONSTANTLY hits the hard drive for data. This is probably why so many units break (reading and writing to a hard drive for 24hrs/day for 30 days would break almost any HD). Even though my XBox 360 is a DLNA certified media player, and this server is DLNA certified, I could not get the two to work together without a computer in the loop. Big disappointment as this was the main reason I bought this product over other server.
Pros Simple web interface
Cons Box dies after 30 days. Its horribly slow. Buff Tech support need to learn their own product. Tech support had me update firmware because box was dying. The firmware upgrade wiped out all my data.
Summary I would look for a different vendor. Buff Tech support is useless and their customer support even worse. After 33 days, I have to pay to have them send me a product that works. Spent 4 hours on the phone with tech support which doesn't seem to know their own product. RUN don't walk to a different vendor and device.
Pros works well when it works
Cons Suceptable to power issues
Summary I bought a linkstation/live 250 in may, the unit stopped working when power went out in the house. They said it was a fan problem and replaced the unit but I paid shipping to them. Now it is April and the replacement unit failed with a bad disk drive. They sent an RMA but I will ship it to them again!
I use the unit to back up my PC and laptop using Memeo. Not too good at it since it fails and the PC and Laptop keep running...
Pros none - see cons and opinion section for details
Cons defective units last less than 1 year, poor phone service, only 1 year warranty starting at original purchase date
Summary Buffalo is selling defective units:
Original unit died within 10 months. Buffalo replaced this unit under the 1 year warranty. But replacement unit died within 7 months. Being 5 months beyond the original unit's 1 year warranty, Buffalo refused to replace the second defective unit and would not provide any discount on the purchase of a new unit.
Also, Buffalo phone support is awful. Often have to wait at least 45 minutes just to be connected to a real person. Then often put on hold for another 45 minutes (average), then often disconnected and had to call back, only to be put on hold again.
My recommendation: buy a NAS from another company other than Buffalo.
