"don't recommend"on by kittylee
Pros cheap for all the features that it has.
Cons mouse is oversensitive and keeps closing open windows. You need to use an external mouse with this computer.
Summary I will not buy this brand again. The mouse is a pain in the neck. I never had a mouse problem with my old HP Pavillion.

Pros Affordable, Portable, Reliable, WiFi on the fly!
Cons Only 2 USB ports, Not 5.1, Outer case loves fingerprints (I put a skin on and got over it), Not Alienware but also not Alienprice!
Summary I bought mine at Best Buy on January 14th 2008. By January 17th they had already sold out. It was on sale for $449...real awesome deal (especially for Best Buy!). I upgraded to 2GB of ram myself (2 K-Byte 1GB sticks) about a week after I bought it. Best Buy sez to have them do it or it will void warranty. SCAM ALERT! I had never done this before and my dad even came over to watch saying "I've never seen someone destroy a brand new laptop before..." He is a pc nerd too. I followed the instructions from the K-Byte memory packaging. It was amazingly fast and easy to do. We were both impressed. And of course I was greatly relieved when it powered on and booted right up recognizing the new memory instantly...no tweeking or issues at all.
This baby has a super-multi, dual-layer dvd burner that I have used almost daily since day one. I, how shall we say, 'archive' dvd's from n3tf%$x. I installed a few programs (cannot say what but you can figure it out) and my movie library is HUGE. It has never wasted a single disc.
It came with Vista Home Premium and never had any freezing or crashing issues. Actually I take that back, it froze once when I went to CircuitCity dot com (they suck anyway). It also came with Intel Pentium Dual-Core and Dolby Sound Room. Like I said in the cons, it doesn't have 5.1 output but the Sound Room reproduces a virtual surround from 2 speakers. And if you hook up a good 2.1 speaker system (logitech, altec lansing or creative labs) it will compete with your home theater! I watched The Mist the other day using my Creative Labs headphones and it was awesome. Good movie by the way, very riveting! Toshiba calls their display technology TrueBright and that pretty much sez it all. Not full HD though, it's 720p instead of the full 1080p. But what do you expect for under $500? Still way better than standard definition.
People who complain about the USB ports being on the left side of computer and having to deal with a mouse cord are morons. I bought a Logitch wireless mouse (Logitech V220) from the office store for $19.99. It works perfectly to this day, never had to install the disc or anything. Of course it was after I tossed the disc (never do that) I learned it was needed to customize the mouse. Oh well, live and learn. I'm saving up for the Logitech MX Revolution now anyway. Us guys love our gadgets! I also bought a card reader and a four port USB hub. Never really use these much but, again, GADGETS. By the way, newegg dot com is a great place for all your nerd toys. I have them in my favorites.
Also, the only time I ever hear the fan is when burning or watching a dvd, although it isn't loud or even distracting. The unit stays pretty cool. The power brick (ya know, the heavy box in the middle of the power cord) gets a little warm sometimes though. No biggie.
In closing, this is a great laptop from a trusted name. NO COMPLAINTS AT ALL. Think about this, my dad has a comparable HP laptop and paid around $900.
Hope this was helpful...
Pros Easy to use; has all necessary basics; compact size
Cons OEM Battery has only 1.5 hours of usable time. Extended life batteries are available, but at additional cost; only two (2) USB ports.
Summary For a first time laptop, this unit is very good. As stated earlier ease of use is a plus for this laptop, and this is good for those just starting out. My wife especially likes this laptop. We took it with us on vacation and she had a great time using it. While she likes the 'touch-pad' mouse, she did buy a Logitec USB wireless mouse just because she was more comfortable with it.As noted by others, the OEM memory size is only 1GB .. we did find it necessary to max out the memory to 2GB. That said, extra memory was NOT that expensice and this is still a great laptop for those seeking a bargain priced unit.
