"Maybe I have bad luck with Toshibas"
on by Lizard381Pros Nice screen; Large hard drive
Cons DVD Drive fault; Overheats; Internet port fault;
Summary I've had this laptop for nearly an entire year and would feel guilty if I didn't warn people about it.
This was supposed to replace my previous Toshiba when it stopped working, it was still on extended warranty and when it collapsed in Best Buy, they decided to let us pick out a new laptop. We settled on this one.
Upon taking it home, after a day we realised that the dvd drive had stopped reading cds. So we brought it back, got a new one. I took it away to school (I study outside of the states) and exactly five days after we'd bought it, the dvd drive stopped working! Right as I was about to install Ubuntu! Boot from an external you say? Well the bios settings don't allow for booting from usb.
Lets not forget that after installing extra memory, bringing the available memory to 1.5 gigs, the laptop frequently complains that it doesn't have enough system resources to hibernate - once it's using over 470 mbs of ram! I'm a computer science student, so I couldn't afford to ship the laptop off to get it fixed/replaced. At some point during the year, i started having problems when i'd plug in the internet lan cable. It now frequently overheats, and windows obviously needs to be reinstalled, but ah well, can't boot from usb. Easily the most miserable experience I've had with a laptop. This could be a unique experience, but i'd think twice before buying this laptop. -
"Perfect Laptop for the Money"
on by borgesent7Pros Fast Processor, big HD, great screen
Cons New keyboard layout to accomodate express media buttons
Summary I got this laptop at Best Buy at $799 with instant rebate. I bumped it up to 2GB of RAM I had laying around and now is comparable to the $1000 to $1500 sytems. I use it nonstop. It has replaced my desktop and I take it every where. Of the many laptops I have purchased before, this by far is the best I have gotten.

"I bought mine used"
on by 20belowzeroPros Decent display. Fast enough. Runs cooler than my last notebook.
Cons Keyboard took some getting used to. 40 gig hard drive.
Summary I bought this machine used from Craigslist and have been pleasantly surprised with it's performance. It certainly isn't state of the art but for my purposes it's fine. Windows 7 was installed and memory has been upgraded to 2 gigs. It runs everything I want plenty fast. Office loads quickly and there is no screen lag for anything but some games. There are 2 USB ports in the back that don't seem to work but the 2 on the right side work fine. I bought a hard drive dock for a 160 gig WD Scorpio that works just fine and have several large flash drives so storage isn't much of a problem. I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed under Win 7 and that works reasonably well also.
Based on my experience with this machine I would definitely consider another Toshiba whenever I decide to replace this one, probably not this year...No plans right now. I'm satisfied with this one. -
"Excellent Laptop"
on by jeremy1012Pros I've had this laptop for a long time, and it still works great. It doesn't have the fancy features you find on today's laptops, but it does everything I need. Windows XP still rocks, and the 15.4" screen is perfect for me. The keyboard is nice too.
Cons The RAM is my only complaint. I upgraded it to 2GB.
Summary This laptop is worth every penny I paid for it. I've had three Toshiba laptops and they all worked well!

"Excellent, fantastic computer. The build is top notch."
onPros I love this machine. I can operate the keyboard without looking at it. A LAPTOP keyboard! I hated laptops until I was givin this one. My next laptop will definitely be based off of this machine.
Cons Battery life is a bit short, many many years of constant use is surely to blame.
Summary I have 4 laptops at my house for personal use, and I only use this one. The others are rendered useless because I believe that this computer is just fantastic.
