Summary Well, it's been about a year and a half since I got my ASUS G72 Gaming Laptop from Best Buy, and about 3 months since I gave it to my girlfriend when her VIAO killed over. Since then I've been using a Compaq r4000 that was giving to me by one of my clients, it's not the quickest thing it has gotten the job done. Unfortunately it died last week, and I was forced to start reading online reviews in the search for a new laptop.
I was blown away by how many different slates, tablets, pads, net books, laptops, and net tops there are! I've been through enough laptops to know I wanted to try a different screen size, and I was looking to the 11"-13" range. After a few days of searching I started noticing a Toshiba that kept popping up on most of the review sites I'd gone to. The Toshiba r835 was its name, and kicking butt was its game! Its super fast Intel Core i5-2620M Processor was a perfect match for an Ultra-Portable laptop with 8GB DDR3 RAM capacity, a 640GB hard drive, USB 3.0, a dual layer DVD burner, a 13.3" LED backlit HD screen, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, webcam and microphone, and all of this weighing in at just under 3.2lbs.
I've had my new r835 for about four days now, and I couldn't be happier with my decision! The ASUS I had weighed about 10lbs, so going to this 3.2lb machine has been a dream. Intel's Core i5 Processor is unbelievably fast, and when paired with the 802.11n Wi-Fi and 4GB installed RAM this thing is unstoppable! With its 640GB hard drive, storage won't be an issue anytime soon either. Last but not least when considering the Toshiba r835, you MUST keep a few things in mind? this is a 13.3" laptop, WITH a disk drive, and 9 hours of battery life!!! What else could you want?
Pros The battery can hold for 5-6 hours and that it is light.
Cons Slow computer, very cheap plastic material, looks used after several weeks. The keyboard is terrible, keys stuck or don't respond, bad ventilating system that makes the computer noisy and extremely warm. The screen becomes partially white sometimes
Summary This computer was highly recommended in the press, what made it very popular among my classmate at MIT, and easy to compare with those issues: All mentioned above problems appeared to everybody! Some people also showed me how some keys fell out and part of the plastic cover just broke of fell apart....
I hope this (no) recommendation will help you not to buy this computer or any identical model that best-buy is selling now (also p56)
Pros If you're looking for a laptop that is ideal for college students and workers that still has a CD Drive this is it! I have the Core i5 processor so it's very fast for my needs since I am a Junior in College. Can Connect to an HDTV.
Cons Wish it had a better graphics card since I use Photoshop, Indesign etc. Otherwise, it's a great laptop.
Summary I got mine from Office Max for $650, had to wait because the display laptop was the only one left, they were so nice.
They are also offering it NOW at Office Max for $549.88, they don't ship it unfortunately, but if you can find one locally, it's worth the trip, the price is a STEAL! GO FOR IT!
It's ideal for college students, it's VERY light. I love it so mch. It also has Windows 8 Capabilities. Since technology evolves so quickly, be sure THIS will fit your needs. If you just need to adapt for school or work, then this is it. If you're looking for the latest technology with Windows 8 and touch screens, this isn't the one for you.
I love this laptop so much, it serves all my needs and Office Max gave me insurance up to 3 years for only $100 more. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE DEAL!!
Pros Light weight, long battery life
Cons Endless problems in the first 6 months: wouldn't boot up, spent two weeks in repair facility overseas, fan is inadequate, computer shuts down when it overheats.
Summary I bought this computer, after reading many reviews and seeing this model recommended by many experts, for a 5 month trip overseas. I needed a very lightweight computer with long battery life and this model delivers that. Unfortunately either it's just too delicate for travel or I got a lemon because once I embarked on my trip it was one problem after another. Mid-way through SE Asia it simply stopped booting up. One of the only authorized repair centers in the region was in Perth and luckily I was on my way there but had to lug around this useless paperweight for a couple of weeks until we got there. Then it spent 2 weeks in the shop while they replaced the motherboard and other parts. When I got it back the fan kept making a loud whirring noise and shutting down. Finally got a good tech support person after talking with people in three different countries, who indicated it might be overheating and suggested getting a cooling pad. Now I have to carry around a laptop-sized accessory to make my light, thin laptop work. I'm back in the States and it's going back in the shop. This laptop caused endless frustrations on my trip and I could never recommend it to anyone. I used Dells at work for years and they were indestructible and took all kinds of abuse.
