  • "Poor Design and ALWAYS breaking, Warranty means NOTHING"
    on by Jomile88

Pros On paper looks like a decent (overpriced) computer (which is false)

Cons Always some design flaw leading to something breaking. Sony refuses to fix the problems and I spend 90% of the time on the phone arguing with customer service reps.
** Sony repair center is designed NOT to fix your computer and you will end up paying f

Summary I have had nothing but problems with this computer. I thought it was just me but after looking through the forums this is just standard Sony. There are many documented problems with this unit including the screen, touchpad, and power connector. For the price you pay, one would expect a great computer but due to the poor design and TERRIBLE service center I will never buy again a Sony product.

  • "Light, fast, great screen and battery, bad speakers"
    on by LuckyRyder

Pros I have had the prior Z also, which this thing blows away in most regards. Lighter, faster, longer battery life. Solid built and stable design.

Cons I have had some difficulty getting the blueray disk working properly, hangs when unplugged without going through the shutdown procedure. Speakers not really usable for Skype without additional hardware.

Summary The machine is an amazing piece of technology. Not having "real" speakers for skype is a significant drag and the blueray/external video card dock is a little clumsy. That said, the chip set is on fire, fast fast fast given the power profile. It sips. It handles process intensive rendering in real time pretty well.

  • "Screen broke in 2 months"
    on by Guppies1

    Pros Light weight

Cons Nothing but bad bad bad

Summary Screen broke in 2 months. Took 2 weeks to repair come back cover a lot of scratches. Wait for another 2 months now still no part to replace the cover. Send the same review to Sony.ca...lol
They don't even post my review on their site. I guess is a bad review that why.

  • "Disappointing for the price - SONY trying too much"
    on by mdinca

Pros The laptop is extremely light, packed with incredible features given its size.

Cons FAN: - gets really loud after 3+ hours of sustained work. This is unacceptable for this ultra-luxury computer. If you are in a conference room or in a small group, it is EXTREMELY distracting.
Webcam: nobody seems to bother with this, but it is awful

Summary Yes, I wanted the processor, the RAM and all the great features that make this a monster configuration and I was willing to pay good money for that. And it delivers, but I feel that all the peripherals took a hit in this model. The webcam is atrocious, the sound is awful (like banging on chickenwire fence and tin cans), the keyboard is relatively loud (for a SONY), and then fan turns to highest speed after some prolonged use. This is very loud, distracting, and annoying for anyone sitting or working next to you. OK, the webcam and the speakers are not why I bought the computer but it is disappointing that they are as bad as they are for this price. I (and anyone) shouold expect highest quality components all-around in this top-end machine.

I returned mine and will go for some other ultra-light option. It simply bugged me to know I spent 2500+ for a machine that did some things worse than my previous 1000 laptop. Sony tried too much and came up short in user experience. Way short.

  • "OK if you never need support"
    on by cpn1

    Pros high resolution screen

    Cons Sony support is awful

Summary I purchased a vaio vpc-z computer two years ago. The first machine would spontaneously reboot every 2-3 weeks. The first onsite repair left the machine unable to start. Over the next year the machine was returned multiple times. Turnaround was slow taking weeks to months. Sony finally bought the computer back. Foolishly I bought another. It has functioned better but the screen developed black lines several months ago. I was traveling and wasn't in a location for onsite repair. In view of the weeks required for a factory mail in repair, I called and asked if onsite repair would be ok in a month... which was shortly into the extended warranty. I was assured onsite would be acceptable. Two days ago Sony set up an onsite repair. Today Sony calls refuses onsite repair. Not only is tech support incompetent but now it appears that one cannot rely on their commitment. The computer is OK but Sony service is simply nothing short of disaster.
