I recently bought this machine with Windows Vista and was very disappointed for the following reasons: 1) In general, the machine is very slow, taking 5+ minutes to reboot. 2) There always seems to be something huge running in the background. The fan always runs and response from the keyboard is delayed at times. 3) Called Sony Support and they offered to back it down to XP, but warned that some features may not work. 4) The finger scanner does not retain the passwords for your websites. 5) When installing VAIO updates, often an error tells you that the update cannot be applied because the machine is not running Vista (and the machine does in fact run Vista). 6) The VAIO update page cannot tell me if an update has been installed on my machine. (I install updates, but the page still tells me it's not installed). 7) Download Taxi includes special instructions on how to work around the Vista glitch that prevents it from running properly. 8) Sony Support was not able to fix my problems. I finally told them I'm not getting anywhere and want to end the call. 9) I went to 2 Circuit City stores and shared my experiences and the salespeople agreed the machines are slow. 10) When shutting down (which I rarely do because of the speed), I'm consistently confronted with messages telling me that "3rd Party Manager" and "Activation Manager" are preventing my computer from shutting down. 11) The slowness is the biggest issue. It's not the speedy computer I thought I was buying and I'm not running any video games or intensive apps (just Excel, Word, McAfee, and the Internet). When typing on the internet (ie hotmail) the computer skips letters because it seems that something big is running in the background and I can't find anything. In short, if you are restricted by size, it's an okay machine. Otherwise, buy something else.
In all fairness to Sony, I did call them again to try to resolve my issue with the slow computer. Their service tech suggested that I restore the computer to the original factory settings. After doing so, many of the issues were resolved like the fan constantly running, error messages, fingerprint sensor, and the trouble with the update utility. Now, the computer runs much better, but still not as speedy as I would have expected for a $2,000 machine. After talking with several people, the slowness is from the Intel Solo processor (replaced by the Duo in other machines) However, the size is awesome, I take it with me everywhere and the screen is bright and crisp.
