Pros Lots of features! Beatifuly made with a premium carbon fiber body! Runs very cool and quiet, also very slim and light weight! Excellent customer service!
Cons Very expensive! Keyboard does not have a solid or smooth feel to it!
Summary I have owned over a dozen and a half laptops, I probably go through two per year. I have had just about every brand, although I have always favored Sony VAIO'S, because of their very unique style and innovative features. The only other maker, aside from Sony that makes truly nice computers is Apple. Any way, I like just absolutely everything about this computer, especially the very slim and lightweight design, this thing is literally a laptop replacement weighing just 3.6 pounds with the battery attached! Performances is amazing, the screen is awesome, built in WAN is truly amazing, since I'm literally connected anywhere I go! It is amazingly quiet and does not get hot! The only thing that kept me from giving it a 10 is the keyboard. It just does not sound solid and it certainly is not smooth as other laptops that I have used. I have read article of IBM or Lenovo Thinkpad as an alternative to this laptop, but trust me, I have used IBM's, before and I personally would never buy one, because of their very predictable design, bulkiness and weigh. There is no alternative to the Sony VAIO SZ series laptops and that is why I bought it. In the end, it takes another Sony VAIO laptop, to outdo a Sony VAIO laptop. Finally, do not forget Customer Support! In the past I have had to send my VAIO'S for service and my calls always get answered within the first two minutes by a real person speaking fluent english, a day or two later a special pre paid box will arrive, in goes the VAIO and less then 10 days later it's back in business! I cannot say this about ANY of the other manufacturers!
Pros fast, good vid card, lots of features
Summary I in the past month went from a sz110 to a sz120 to a MacbookPro to a sz160. The Macbook was a good laptop. But my programs ran slow on it, and the bootcamp ran games 2x faster than that on the mac side. BUT it was very hot, limited battery, and big. Its a 15in.
The sz160 vs the sz110/120 is made of carbon fiber but you can't tell by looks. Main plus is the screen is backlighted with LED vs a lamp. About 25% more battery time and about 20-25% brighter. It DOES come with a memory card reader. Just lacking a CF reader. And its the ONLY 13in laptop with a Nvidia 7400 128mb vid card. Not the fastest, but will make this laptop the fastest for its size.
Pros Light-weight, comfortable keyboard.
Cons Unreliabe hard drive. Sony is indifferent to customer satisfaction.
Summary Purchased an SZ230 and within 48 hours of initially turning it on the hard-drive became unreadable. Lost all my data-shame on me for not backing it up immediately--but Sony refused to replace my brand new VAIO laptop---pennywise and poundfoolish. CSR sent a form letter/ e-mail response to my complaint. I purchased this VAIO for personal use because my company provides them for work but my personal experience with the VAIO SZ230 and subsequent indifference and inflexibility by Sony has definitely turned me off Sony products. For the premium Sony charges I had higher expectations. The irony is in Sony's form letter response they state "When a customer purchases from Sony, our goal is complete satisfaction with the product." Apparently that statement was written by someone in the marketing department and meant only as rhetoric.
Pros Light, powerful (the graphics switch is especially useful), everything I could want in a computer in under 4 lbs.
Cons This keyboard is driving me seriously batty.
Summary The travel on these keys is so long that I frequently will be typing and - whoops, got to go back and fix that word because the "t" didn't get in to it. It's really driving me nuts. I have to type so much harder than I'm used to, which really tires out my hands and can't be good for things like carpel tunnels.
Also, the touch pad sits right where my palms rest so whenever I type my mouse jumps all over the screen, occasionally hovering over something that totally gets in my way. At least there's software to disable clicks while I'm typing, but the moving pointer really gets on my nerves.
If you can, go to a Sony store and spend some time with the keyboard before you buy. As much as I love this computer in every other way, I am seriously going nuts with this keyboard.Updated
So I just moved my wrists a bit and the key travel issue went away - turns out that the trackpad issue caused the mouse to select other areas and, well, I'm not sure exactly how it happens. The good news is that I no longer have a mouse jumping all over the screen, and I no longer miss letters when I'm typing. 9 OUT OF 10 STARS!
Pros Lightweight, amazing screen, good keyboard, fast
Cons Battery life not as good as I expected
Summary This is a great laptop for a business traveler, it just performs the way you want a laptop to perform. I was hoping the battery would last longer (about 3:30 is the best I've gotten out of the standard one, about 6:00 with the extended), but otherwise I have no complaints.
