Sony VAIO S170B (Pentium M 715 1.5 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB HDD)

CNET Editors' Take

September 2, 2005 4:03 AM PDT

Sony's VAIO S series contains a few thin-and-light laptop designs with characteristic Sony touches, including a sharp design and an inflated price. You can read CNET's full reviews of two configurations: the older VAIO VGN-S260 and the newer VAIO VGN-S470P.

The VAIO S-series laptops each weigh less than five pounds, which puts them on the lighter end of the thin-and-light spectrum. Each model has a 13.3-inch wide-screen display, an Intel Pentium M or Celeron processor, up to 2GB of RAM, and up to 100GB of hard drive space. You have a choice between an Nvidia GPU or integrated graphics. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are also available, and you can choose either a CD-RW/DVD combo drive or a multiformat DVD burner. Microsoft Windows XP Home comes standard, and you can upgrade to XP Pro for $100. Finally, the VAIO S series comes with a decent package of bundled music and video software.
