Pros - 1080p screen (I got the upgraded screen)
- Windows 7 Media Center (Sony includes a Blu Ray plug in, which along with Netflix and Live TV make this a fantastic media center laptop)
- Zippy graphics
-Superb build quality
Cons - battery life is mediocre. Not helped by Sony's default setting that charges only till 80% (to prolong battery life). I disabled the battery protection feature and now get around 2.5 hours of media play back on full bright screen.
Summary I use mine for work and home. I considered a Macpro 17 inch before settling on the Vaio FW. Windows 7 plus a superbly built hardware means this is the best value of it's class. I've owned Dell and HP notebooks for over 12 years now, with new upgrades almost every year. One huge difference between a Vaio and Dell or HPs I have owned is the build quality. From the key board to the rigidity of the plastic to the screen, the Sony is so much nicer to use.
Older Vaios used to run hotter and the fans were always in the wrong place, but the newer Vaios are very well designed. I would highly recommend this to ANYONE who is considering either a 17 inch Mac Pro or any entertainment notebook from Dell or HP. Just compare these side by side and I bet you'll walk away with the Vaio!
"Great Value!"on by minnielli
Pros Great all around computer offering a good chip set for the the money, decent graphics card, crystal clear display, and I love the keyboard. I have had the laptop a week and I am still investigating everything it has to offer.
Cons Blueray player needs some refining I may have just not got all the settings right yet. Have to turn to presentation mode on external display only for BD playback on TV once I did this the display did not take up entire screen could be a setting.
Summary Extremely happy with my purchase!
Pros Build Quality, Decent Performance, Quiet, Good Value, Blu-Ray, Styling,
Nice Vibrant Screen, Great Keyboard,
Cons Brown Color, Screen Resolution is not HD, Could use a slot loading drive rather than the pop up tray, DDR2 memory rather than DD3, Battery Life is Weak, and kind of heavy, speaker quality, maybe LED backlit monitor would have been good
Summary I have owned this computer for two weeks and have to say I am very pleased. Yes I did compile quite a list in the "Cons" category but understand that is just a wish list. What you actually get on this rig is decent and either meets or exceeds expectations. First off besides the brown cover, which I don't like, the rest of the styling on the machine is beautiful. It makes you think if Apple built a PowerBook in black, it would look like this (except for aforementioned brown cover). The screen color is very vibrant and when combined with the Blu-Ray player produces beautifully rich colors. The combination of the Centrino 2 processor, 512MB discreet ATI VRAM, plus the WiFi N chip makes for a really balanced and powerful computing experience. I can run it on the "High Power" scheme and never worry about overheating like on a Apple Powerbook. Overall just a great notebook for the price and I know what I am talking about. I have owned laptops during the early nineties that cost upwards of $5000 and have bought 128MB RAM modules for a $1000 15 years ago. So I know what it means to plunk down money on technology. Who would have imagined that in 2009, you can get so much computing for the price. One last thing, if you are in the market for a new computer always buy one with discreet or dedicated memory. I refuse to buy any machine without. It's not because I am sometime of gamer or video editor but the dedicated GPU really takes the workload off the main processor and ensures an incredibly fast and smooth computing experience. Good Luck.
Pros 1) Lightweight at 6 lbs.
2) Very easy to use (features)
4) Wireless is easy to use.
5) Multimedia Suite easy as a breeze to set up and use.
6) Great Sound from the speakers.
7) Blue Ray Disc is execllent and easy to connect to TV
Cons Nothing so far found to be wrong. I initally paid more for this notebook at Christmas time and have see a $150 price drop but its the best laptop I have used in many a year. Its even better than my IBM Laptop
Summary This is a laptop you will find fun to use, it is a powerful laptop for your graphic intesnsive programs, the speed and stability of this unit with the Windows 7 Home Premium makes this a must have computer. The Vaio Updates are automatic and the Vaio care program works better than most others I have seen. It is well worth the money spent and I would recommend this computer to anyone looking for a stuylish and fast system perfomance.
Pros + Love the design
+ Great productivity (easily runs over 100 apps at a time)
+ Surprising battery life for such a high performance machine (3 hours)
+ Flat keyboard is way more comfortable than Apple's
+ Bright display
Cons - No built-in microphone
- The fan is a bit too noisy
Summary Sony Vaio makes truly hugh-quality luxorious laptops.
They might cost you a bit more than other laptops, but you get what you pay for.
