I have been researching for many months on which mini-laptop to get and decided on the MSI Wind U100-641US. I already have a nice PC to play intense games, but wanted something super portable to use between clients sites for configuring routers, firewalls, and keep documents for reference. I decided on the 160GB HDD due to the size for storing items. I wanted the wireless N, but in the real business world, the N wireless isn't even a standard yet and the G works great on this mini, plus it comes with a 10/100 cable connection too. I was really surprised that it came with no junkware, and basically came with Windows XP Home and trial of Office 2007. The camera is a cool feature, but not needed and really not that great either. It does boot up quick. plus the 3-cell version makes it so light and really portable! Just realize this is not a $3,000 laptop and it is meant for simple tasks, but not to say it does it really well for the size. Honestly a 1.6 GHz and 1GB of memory is plenty fast enough for surfing the internet, reading emails, and editing a document. This 10? is a better decision then some other 8.9? for people with big fingers as the keyboard is almost standard size. Bravo to MSI, which beat out my decision to Asus, HP, Dell, Sony and many others. THANK YOU and all for only $319!

"Excellent construction, runs Windows 7 without a hitch."

4.5 stars  | on by Todd Crenshaw

Pros

Runs Windows 7 without any problems at all. Bright clear screen. Good keyboard. Wireless picks up even weak signals without any problem. External video is amazing, driving DLP's past their highest resolution point with ease. Boots quickly.

Cons

Mouse pad and buttons need improving. Once in a while the MSI Wind will go to sleep for no reason. Hitting the power button returns it to full operation in a matter of seconds, but it's still strange that it does this.

I like the MSI-Wind a lot. For the money it's been a great netbook. In Windows XP mode there is a scrolling desktop which gives the user 1024x800 as the screen scrolls up and down. This feature is not available in Windows 7, but the 1024x600 still works well. The crispness of the screen is really amazing, very clear and bright even in sunlight. I opted for the nine cell battery available on ebay and can run all day in battery mode or about 4 hours in full AC mode (bright screen, no power down..etc). The built in camera is also very clear and works very well. MSI was one of the first really good netbooks. I purchased mine shortly after they were released. Other netbooks are out now but I still like my MSI Wind over most of them, especially since a six cell MSI Wind can be purchased for under $280.00. I haven't had any problems at all with the MSI Wind and can not comment on customer service, but I would expect it to be typical of most companies now days, you're pretty much on your own. My sister is asking about a Fujitsu M2010. I compared it to the MSI Wind. The MSI Wind wins hands down.

"Motherboard problem at 5 months; MSI warranty worthless"

0.5 stars  | on by MaxDora

Pros

Everything, included is in on the few laptops that don't come with the Vista nightmare. But it had a 5 month shelf life.

Cons

At 5 months the USB ports refused to function; it began taking up to 3 minutes to load windows. I had over 1000 photos stranded on the computer and no way to get them off. MSI refuses to address the problem.

Summary

The computer itself was fine - for as long as it was working properly. There is no one here authorized to repair or do warranty work. I contacted MSI by email; they forewarded my problem to their tech department and that was the last I heard from them. Even with ... Read full review

The computer itself was fine - for as long as it was working properly. There is no one here authorized to repair or do warranty work. I contacted MSI by email; they forewarded my problem to their tech department and that was the last I heard from them. Even with the problems I had with the MSI Windbook, I could have put it down to just getting a bad one - IF the company had stepped foreward to honour it's warranty. If the company won't stand behind it's product, then the product should be avoided.
