Pros Nothing good about it when it wont work
Cons Faulty EEPROM chip
Summary Lenovo Thinkpad E520 that were manufactured in the last quarter of 2011 have a faulty EEPROM chip. This means eventually the laptop wont start up. Lenovo has recognized there is a problem, but will not replace the faulty chip if the laptop is out of warranty. My E520 was two months out of warranty when it quit working. Lenovo informed me I will have to pay them to replace the chip that was faulty in the first place. Beware!!
Pros Got mine cheap in '11; Neat fingerprint scanner to unlock, good battery life, solid feel
Cons It lasted 54 weeks in my possession before it failed. Well documented problem with the E520 motherboard (check out the lenovo community), lenovo did NOTHING to help me. They told me they only extend the warranty one week... not the two i needed.
Summary Good computer if it works, mine an a whole bunch of others did not, they had a problem and did nothing to help people who were unfortunate enough to have the computer work for over a year before failing.
Pros Hardware profile is nice for the price.
Cons Poor quality and warranty have driven me to change vendors.
Summary I run IT for a small business. Every employee has an lenovo laptop. Six of them are doing well. Got one that was a dud. It died after 6 months and was fixed under warranty. Same laptop died 6 months later a few weeks after warranty expired.
Lenovo says it will cost $500 to fix. No thanks. Sorry, but we'll be changing vendors.
Couple of suggestions for Lenovo:
1) Have a warranty grace period.
2) Or guarantee your warranty work. If you fix it under warranty, extend the warranty on that machine another 6 months as a way of guaranteeing your work.
3) It took 5 calls to get through to support. First 4 attempts the system hung up on me. When your computer dies and you're trying to call support, you really shouldn't hang up on your customer. It makes us feel helpless.
Pros Good customer service.
Cons I will NEVER buy any Lenovo/IMB products again.
Summary I had to return it to Lenovo support 6 TIMES! the hard drive failed, motherboard too. just endless problems. It took me MONTHS sending it back and forth to the repair facility. I was so upset. They replaced it with a new machine. and 2 months later it crashed too. I swear I only used it for regular day to day activities, like e-mail, movies and music. Awful experience. I will never buy any Lenovo products again.
Pros Ran until the warranty expired.
Cons Died! Just out of warranty.
Summary Beware!! Ebay has users selling motherboard repair focusing on this unit!
