"A simple choice of keyboard software made this unusable"

0.5 stars  | on by Geryth

Pros

Durable, performs well, looks good, it's actually a good product if not for one terrible flaw. . .

Cons

Starts off with a slow boot-up.
HP installed software really gets in the way (support assistant is slow and lags, and so is the gui if you adjust volume with the fn key)
TERRIBLE customer service.

Summary

This would be a great product. But, those blasted keyboard shortcuts! I rate this .5 stars because this one decision made this product 100% frustration and unusable for me, despite it's pros. Otherwise I would rate it 4.5.

This would be a great product. But, those blasted keyboard shortcuts! I rate this .5 stars because this one decision made this product 100% frustration and unusable for me, despite it's pros. Otherwise I would rate it 4.5.

On every 4535s model, if you hold down the keys "h+o+u" it executes an F11 command and if you hold down "n+o+u" it executes an F12 command. If you type quickly, words will trigger this, such as "amount, found, should, announce" etc. So typing an email in Google Chrome for me pulls up the "Developer-Tools" or goes "Full-Screen" every time I type one of these words. Other programs have even worse effects depending on what they code F11 or F12 to do. This made this product unbearable to use. I tried to get it resolved by going through customer support, and they were absolutely no help. I was only confronted with copious amounts (yep, a trigger word, just opened chrome's developer tools as I was writing this review) of incompetence from obviously outsourced support. Once they finally figured out this was a software problem and not a hardware problem (I told them that at the very start and it still took them a MONTH to agree with me), they simply dropped my case, despite the fact that it is THEIR software, specifically coded and implemented on the 4535s model. I would have been perfectly willing to wait for a new driver to be coded and released, but I received no such notion that they were willing to do that and I've given repeated inquiries for them to look at my case and tell me what they can do and I've received nothing. So I'm doing the only logical thing, and I'm dumping this product for a different one, and I'm making dang sure it's not HP.

If you type with any amount of gusto, be prepared to be driven crazy by their keyboard short-cuts.
