"Excellent computer for the price"
on by GeneAumPros WSXGA+; eSATA; no blue LEDs!; sleek design
Cons no firewire port
Summary I have a DV5z - an incredible desktop replacment. The author of this review should have requested/purchased the WSXGA+, which is an option for $75. 1680x1050 pixels on 15.4" is perfect. The eSATA port is a must for video editing etc. Supports 800 memory bus.
Many great features. -
"Great Value!"
on by RuttingbuckPros Sleek design, light weight, wonderful key board...
Cons Shinny finish is not practical, preloaded crapware!
Summary I am very impressed with this unit and recommend it to anybody looking for a mid-range PC at a bargin price. I paid $599 at Beat Buy after doing a fair amount of research. I can't speak about this units battery life, I know that CNET railed on how poorly it tested. The fact is, for this price I can buy another battery! This HP replaces my two year old Dell Inspiron that crapped-out, Dell is so overrated! Cheers

"Flawed Review!"
on by fireballzPros stylish design; solid build quality; excellent feature set; superb IGP peformance;
Cons battery life
Summary *note I don't have the exact same configuration as this model, but it is similar - same IGP and processor.
This reviewer is missing a critical component of this system that places it well above the competition: the ATI Mobility Radeon 3200. Why he dismisses it simply because it is an integrated graphics card is understandable, but seriously, you should at least TEST the component! And if you bothered to do so you would see that this IGP competes well with other low end dedicated graphics cards even though it is integrated. It is quite a capable card, even able to run some 3d games at reasonable settings (think 8400M GS level). I mean it absolutely blows away any Intel graphics chip.
Moving on... you dampen on the processor's performance, but for most people and everyday tasks, it has more than enough power. It only becomes an issue if you are doing processor intensive tasks, which again for most people they aren't doing everyday.
I will agree battery life is poor. If you absolutely need more battery life, pick another laptop. But if you can manage to be plugged in most of the time, then battery life shouldn't be a dealbreaker.
Everything else about the laptop is simply great. Stylish design, great build quality, excellent feature set, etc. It also runs fairly cool and quiet, and the WXGA screen I have is good too.
If you're considering a mainstream notebook, and if excellent battery life isn't one of your main requirements, take a serious look at this machine. It is terrific in almost all aspects, especially considering it is capable of gaming at a very low price. Highly recommended! -
"Decent computer for the money but it's not ideal"
on by rsales4computersPros I like the keyboard feel and the snap of the keys. Clean bright screen. cool little remote and I love the hdmi output for displaying on my monitor or plasma screen.
Cons I don't like the touch pad. Excessive heat (actually have red marks on my leggs) yes I wear pants! Which leads in to the shutdowns for no reason. The thing just turns itself off. I think because of the heat. Battery life is terrible
Summary I bought this for a quick replacement and at the price ($640.00 with taxes) I guess I can't complain to much but I also can't praise the thing either. It runs solid (when it does not shut itself off) Has good memory and some cool touch controls. Did I mention that I burnt my leg with this notebook?

"Poor Keyboard & Mousepad Design & Response"
on by lnfitzPros Does the basics if you can get beyond the idiosyncracies of the keyboard and mousepad.
Good audio/speaker for a laptopCons Input (Keyboard & Mousepad)
Output: screen is on its way out after less than 1 year with very low wear & tear.Summary I promise it isn't me. I have had tech guys come over and be flummoxed by the lack of response of the keyboard. Also HP PAINTED the separation between the right and left click on the mousepad. That there is no tactile separator means that I end up displaying a menu instead of making a selection. I haven't found a laptop that I love yet, but this one has been the most frustrating experience yet. I guess that the display is now going away at less than 1 year of ownership where it is used by one adult without leaving the house means that I should have purchased an extended warranty... but it also is doing me a favor by making me send this HP down the road and ending my neverending frustration with it.
