From start to finish, the HP Compaq tc4200 tablet is a no-nonsense mobile system for those who care as much about top performance as having a long-lasting battery. It may lack dedicated video memory and an optical drive, but you can get a Pentium M Sonoma processor between 1.6GHz and 2.13GHz or choose a bargain-basement version that uses a previous-generation 1.5GHz Celeron processor. You can also choose a 40GB, 60GB, or 80GB hard drive; all spin at a satisfying 5,400rpm. The tc4200 also offers 512MB of average-speed 400MHz RAM and a choice of 802.11b/g and a/b/g Wi-Fi radios. Prices for the family range from an entry-level $1,599 to a fully loaded $2,099; the $2,099 (as of May 2005) unit we tested included a 1.8GHz Pentium M Sonoma processor, 512MB of memory, a 60GB hard drive, and Intel 802.11b/g Wi-Fi.
