Cons It is not fast. At times, it seems "relaxed" while at other times it seems downright pokey. However, I do not find that performance in unacceptable, especially once applications have loaded. I guarantee that if you start taking notes on this, performan on | Read full review

"Cool, make the switch"
onSummary I love the Tablet PC. I was a die hard laptop user and thought this was a good next move. The Compaq TC1000 has been very good. Great battery life and I like being able to snap everything together or apart. Forget the docking station and opt for a USB 2.0 device instead. Most of comments are around the software and not the tablet itself. I replaced the WI-FI with a combo A-B-G card and added Bluetooth. If they can only get a wireless power cord, I would be set. Office 2003 is going to be a must for any Tablet PC owner. I am glad I waited for this version of Office to make the switch to a pen. I can understand if people have a lackluster experience without Office 2003 or other ink enabled applications. Web surfing with a pen just sucks. I would rather have a scheduled recognition to keep writing and not do any recognition in real time. I added the max memory and shut down the virtual memory. I tweaked XP just like I would on a desktop and it added lots of speed. XP is bloated pig for speed and you have to tune it for performance. No change with that problem for this device. I switched from a desktop, laptop, and pda and will never go back. I will only crave more WiFi G and A connections to move everything around faster.

Cons The speed of the machine is not as fast as some on the market but is acceptable for most business uses. There are some new product glitches mostly related to the software. on | Read full review

"The most popular tablet PC"
onSummary After some pretty exhaustive research I found that the HP TC1000 is by far the best selling tablet PC. Rather than argue with the masses I went ahead and purchased one and it is just fantastic and downright well worth the price. It is very versatile and very cool looking. I wrote this review without the keyboard using just the stylus. The handwriting recognition is down right scary given that my penmanship leaves much to be desired.

"Best to wait a for a better processor"
onSummary Purchased the TC1000 in April 03; returned it in May Overall, I loved the design, look and feel of TC1000. The machine felt solid (except the hinge: explained further down in this review), sharp and stylish, and the full-sized stylus was a key feature. The key problem was performance. I had read the reviews and complaints regarding performance, but still figured it was worth trying it out. Even with an additional 256MB of ram, I found that running the Media player with another application (MS Word, EXCEL or IE) put the machine in conniptions and left me very frustrated and thinking back to the days of Pentium I. Despite the great battery time, I was dissapointed in the Transmeta chip and found the experience to be unworkable in a multi-tasking environment. Another issue I had with the machine was the weak hinge between the tablet and the keyboard. Unless you are on a very stable surface, the tablet/display portion would bounce a little bit when you type, quickly inducing eye-strain after a few minutes use. This make it very difficult to use the TC1000 in laptop mode on your lap, on a plane, train or car. It also made me worry that in a year or two, the hinge would not be able to support the tablet portion. For those thinking of this machine, I would recommend waiting a while to see if Compaq comes up with a Centrino or Pentium Mobile solution. The tempered glass surface, great form factor, solid overall feel, nice side-buttons all makes this hands-down the best designed machine, but the inept performance makes the machine a frustrating experience for users who are used to machines that can handle the demands of a multi-tasking work environment.

"Perfect for a road warrior"
onSummary I love this machine. At less than 5 pounds travel weight(including power brick, keyboard, and cables) it goes anywhere. Battery life is an honest 3 hours. Best of all, the handwriting recognition actually works and is much more convienent on a plane than the keyboard. I considered a pure slate without an attached keyboard, but I still want a one for the hotel. There are faster machines, but for traveling sales types, this is a solid, functional design that is more than adequate for office productivity software.
