Pros Best specs that I could find: very fast, lots of storage, cool lights, etc.
Cons The best price that I could find is $899 refurbished, weight is 8.6 pounds
Summary My old notebook PC crashed (I could not even turn it on) recently, so I looked for a new PC. I need both a desktop and a notebook at all times, but fortunately for me, my current desktop did not crash. What I mean is that, despite neither computer is "primary", this beefed-up monster (I am simply joking!) still proves very useful. Everything there is good, save for the weight and the price, but these factors turned out to be minor, and for me, do not even take a point out of the review. In short, this PC is a good notebook, especially if you cannot get a newer M1710.
Pros Speed, Gaming, Compiling, Student Oriented
Cons Heats up fast, Slow DVDRW Drive
Summary This laptop is downright amazing. I purchased mine in June and it's the best thing that has ever happened to me.
Gaming performance is incredible! The graphics card is enhanced by having one of the best looking 17" screens around. The lights on the front, sides, and top are nice when listening to music (there is a WINAMP plugin to make them pulse to the music). The battery life is great for something this powerful. I know people with Pentium 4's in their laptop and they hardly get 45 minutes while playing music. I close my lid, pop on some music, and use the front control buttons for over 2.5 hrs of easy listening at high volume. The speakers really blast. For a laptop, they are just about as good as it gets. Walking accross campus holding it like a boombox gets a few strange looks but it's because the volume is incredible.
The only problems I have had is fear that I may overheat the laptop and the slow dvd drive. I've designed a custom cooling solution using USB powered fans to draw heat away from the spots that get the hottest (example: Graphics Card). The DVD drive burns fast (8x) but is only reading at 1,400 Kb/sec and get confused when read more than one file from a disc at a time. But these are things I can live with because most of the time I use external drives anyways.
The PERFORMANCE makes up for ANY downfalls.
Besides, after a 33% off coupons and 12% with a 3 year plan (through a dell program) I was able to order the laptop for 2,200.
Pentium M 2ghz
1 GB RAM
Geforce 6800 Ultra Go
80 GB 7200RPM HD
External USB 2.0 160GB SATA Hard Drive in Enclosure
Pros ITS ALL GOOD!!!!
Cons I dont think there is any and i dont think there will ever be any
Summary OK this machine is REALLY nice. i have a 2.13GHZ processor 2GHZ of ram 100GB hard drive and the wireless connection w/ bluetooth the 256 Geforce card and the speaker are AWSOME. Now its quick havent had any problems i was playing GUILD WARS and listening to my music and scanning my files w/ NORTON no prob. Everything is nice now ive read some reviews on the light leakage and the "sparkle" but the light leakage you cant even see it unless your looking at a black screen wich is like never and its not much at all and the "sparkle" havent seen it i think they fixed it on new orders. I also need to tell you my friend has the Alienware Area51 7700 and its really damn HOT so hot the table he had it on was glass and was so hot you cant even keep your hand there. He installed an external keyboard and mouse so it will cool down a little but it was still too damn hot. Anyway i cant think of anything else to say but if you have any questions comment on this please. OHH and for the record Dell has special tech support for the XPS GEN2 and its in the USA NOT India check your facys my friends. How you like that one.Updated
I forgot to say but I got my through small business and they offer a cheaper price. If you get someone on the phone and order it tell them you want a cheaper price. Tell them you will call back and when you do just tell them you want them to do something better about the price they will.I got mine for $2837.54 with all the specs i wrote before taxes and shipping and everything.I also got it in about a week or so.Updated
So i got it and now i like it. But its going to be even better if I got it cheaper. So I called Dell back and told them to transfer my call to returns. I told them that i want to return my laptop. They asked me why I told them i didnt like something then they told me i can exchange it, they would send me another one and then i would send the one i origanally got back. I wasnt sure so I asked to get an extra discount to keep it so I got an extra $200 off, I said fine. So now Im getting the system listed above for $2637.54. I think thats pretty good for a Pentium M 2.13ghz, 2gbs of RAM, 100gb hard drive, 256mb Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra, wireless and bluetooth card, 8x DVD-RW/CD-RW drive, and some other stuff but you get the point right. Please comment on what you think. THANKS
Pros Nce screen, seems fast.
Cons Not worth the hassels dealing with Dell customer service
Summary Working with Dell to get the XPS was perhaps the worst purchasing experience I have ever had. Purchaseing it was simple since they want your order but fixing the mistakes they made in the order is next to impossible. Dell's customer care department is in India, and as you can imagine they are as far away from understanding Dell products as they are away from the Dell home office. After spending $3800 on an XPS, I can say that this will be the last computer I ever purchase from Dell.
Pros It is fast, great for gaming--
Cons It is not good for multimedia professionals...
Summary Forget about using Photoshop, Flash, AfterEffects, 3dsmax, or any type of program that requires you to use tools...Attention to detail is lost entirely because the native resolution of this monitor is 1920x1200, any other setting makes everything fuzzy. Surfing the net is not that fun either. I had to beef up the font size in my browser so i could read it without getting a headache.
Now I am in the process of exchanging the unit, for the inspirion 9300...as of today it is now available with the 770 pentium m, so I can get essentially the same comp, just a bit cheaper, and be able to read everything, and design with my end user in mind.
This comp is just not for anyone who is thinking of using it for design or web surfing....unless you don't mind looking like a squinting hunchback while you're working on it...
Barely worth a 5 to me...
