  • "Disappointed. Slower than my 4 year old Inspiron 1420."
    on by chibineko717

Pros Nice specs, good price, nice keyboard, and lightweight.

Cons Whitewashed screen, bad trackpad, hard mouse buttons, tinny/muffled sound,no dedicated media controls, and Wifi instability. The black color is really brown and picks up every fingerprint.

Summary I got this for a great deal and after having the Inspiron 1420 for over 4 years, I thought the 14z would be perfect for me.
The keyboard is nice, but it is not backlit and the lettering is grey and hard to read.
The screen has a whitewashed look and colors are not very saturated.
The mouse buttons are very hard to push and the trackpad does not handle scrolling/multi-touch features well.
The model I received did not have a recovery partition.
The Wifi on this model is very unstable. I would always be disconnected even though my sister using my 1420 is still connected. Using the internet was very sluggish and slower than my 1420, even though the 14z has better specs.
This laptop does not have dedicated media controls, but they added 3 useless buttons to the top where media buttons were on the old Inspirons. These buttons only connect to Dell bloatware.
I had to return mine since it was so slow. Dell seemed to try to jump on the "thin" bandwagon at the expense of performance and quality.

Pros These are Dells budget utility laptops, hope you get a good one, and they last forever. You get a great value in terms of features and performence.

Cons Display overdrives the whites, washes out the screen. ONLY 1 USB? and the usual noisy Dell fan. Invest in a cooling stand and some caned air, I am always amazed by how much dust comes out.

Summary I paid 465 at Best Buy, seems a fair price.

  • "Perfect combination of price, design, and speed."
    on by MikeyInTheD

Pros Great brand, amazing value, compact size while still offering DVD drive, smooth operation

    Cons Fingerprints!

Summary I purchased the Dell 14z laptop about a month ago directly from Dell. Their customer service was so amazing that I bought right then and didn't even shop elsewhere. I have the Intel i5, 750GB, and 8GB Ram. Don't believe in buying the cheapest model out there, but the value of the package I got is awesome! These will be a smooth and speedy computer for at least the next 3 years. Paid less than $700 on Dell's website. You won't find any brand out there with this kind of value and customer service. ASUS may be the only better brand for quality, but you don't get near the selection or to build you own exact system. And their prices can't touch this! This laptop is perfect for a general user all the way up to a power user like me. Only person that may shy away from this one is a gamer - doesn't have customized graphics card.

  • "Slim, light, battery lasts forever."

Pros Super fast after removing bloatware.

Cons Bloatware needs to be removed.

  • "Little POWERHOUSE"
    on by Gman1925

Pros Battery life 9.5 hrs this is great, Clean look and well constructed.
Laptop you can place on your lap because it doesn't run HOT.

Cons The plastic usb covers are annoying and get in the way. The cover should be treated to prevent or reduce fingerprint smudges. Hate all the unwanted software Dell pre-loads on their machines.

Summary I bought the Inspiron 14z 7 weeks ago and I love it. The laptop is a powerful little machine. I have worked 7-8 hours on one full battery charge. This is very impressive because I put it through a rigorous workout. I open and close Outlook, connect to my VPN, download large files and the battery lasted and still had another hour of charge. I got the i5-2.40GHz and 6GB of RAM which makes the laptop very quick and reponsive. For the price of $608 total so far it looks like a wise investment.
