Dell Inspiron 14z review

While the processor and RAM/hard-drive configurations aim to impress, there are no dedicated graphics options on the Inspiron 14z. Gamers will have to look elsewhere, or settle for the better-than-you-think integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics included, which are capable of casual and even light mainstream gaming with settings turned down.

We were impressed with the battery life on this thinner Inspiron; the included six-cell battery lasted 5 hours and 35 minutes in our video playback test. That outperformed the larger Inspiron 15R, and bested the equally thin but higher-powered Dell XPS 15z. It's also more than enough battery life to last a solid workday, provided you keep an eye on power settings. Seven hours would have been even nicer, but we really can't complain much.

Dell includes a standard one-year mail-in service warranty with the Inspiron 14z. Extra warranty years and service levels can be added on Dell's Web site: three years of basic service cost an extra $169, and the three-year "best service" package, which adds premium phone support, accidental damage protection, and LoJack antitheft, costs $373. Dell's Web site offers 24-7 toll-free phone service and Web support, including documentation and software drivers that are easy to find.
