Summary My sister recently bought a Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop for her own personal use. Immediately after its delivery, it had to be taken to LCC, a local Dell sales and help center, to be "cleaned-up." This computer came with so many pre-installed junk programs; it would barely run properly. The man that helped could only clean so much of it which helped little overall. He said he had never seen a computer so slow.

The laptop will not install another anti-virus program because the hard drive is so full, leaving only the pre-installed anti-virus program which will not update when connected to the internet. When trying to change performance settings within the Control Panel, certain links will not open or respond. I have tried running Disk Defragmenter to allow smoother running; the program will not respond and/or open. The Run Command does not work.

The security design for this computer is annoying. It constantly dims, asking if you're an administrator and if you would like to continue--when you're trying to delete to the Recycling Bin.

When opening the Task Manager (to determine the processes and programs running), it redirects you to a separate screen where it asks again what you're trying to open. It is fairly time consuming for such a simple action (especially when trying to see why the computer is running so slow).

I think the Dell Inspiron 1420 was a waste of money and I, personally, would have sent it back.

Graphics are nice but overall doesn't make up for the poor system.

Pros I recently purchased an Inspiron 1420 and have had nothing but problems with it. Vista Home Premium does not function properly on this laptop. If it's Vista, then Dell shouldn't sell it with this model.

Cons Slow performance, blue screens of death constantly, can't load another security software, mouse pad is erratic, boot up and shut down times are rediculous.

Summary I used to be a Dell fan, but I'm looking for alternate laptops now and I'll even spend more than I did with Dell. I should have bought the Lemon policy at Best Buy, but am kicking myself for not doing so, since I had relatively few problems with other Dell laptops in the past. No longer the case.
