Summary I have been ready for some time to upgrade my formerly very nice and relatively powerful HP notebook computer to something more substantial. As a result, I started doing a lot of research. It did not take long for me to settle on what I consider to be the perfect machine for my needs which typically require having several processor/memory intensive programs open at the same time. These programs include Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, Minitab statistical analysis software, image editing software, and a very sophisticated wastewater modeling program. Based on an extensive amount of research, my choice became this Asus G75VW 17.3-inch notebook.

This Asus model is considered to be a "gaming" laptop and though I don't play games on my computer, anyone doing intensive computer work should seriously consider a gaming platform because of the incredible performance specifications these computers have. I spent all of Saturday and Sunday installing my software on this new computer. Everything installed without any problems at all. I am now at a project site doing wastewater modeling for a customer with my new, and very beautiful, Asus laptop, and I could not be more thrilled with the quality and performance of my computer.

Just as I am so impressed with my new laptop, so is everyone who sees it. To begin with, the screen is awesome. It has the perfect brightness, clarity, non-glare, high resolution I was looking and hoping for. This is a very, very well-built, powerful, QUIET, and cool-running notebook. I have truly put this machine to maximum use and it has performed flawlessly. Without hesitation, I give this laptop a five star rating.

But you must know what you are buying in considering this particular laptop. So to be clear: This is a big, heavy machine. Absolutely!! But it fits well in a computer backpack and though I'm getting on in years I don't find traveling, from New Orleans to Seattle, for example, to be particuarly difficult with something so substantial. I wanted a large computer. I need a large screen and a full-sized keyboard. Such wants equate to large size and some decent weight. But these potential "negatives" are easily managed.

I have read about people having problems with the graphics card in this machine because it is so new and drivers may be an issue. I have not had any problems with the graphics card. The SSD which holds the operating system provides an incredibly fast boot up. This is a fast, powerful notebook. My previous HP notebook operated very hot and actually was uncomfortable to use at times. Temperature is a non-issue with this Asus model. I actually can't quite believe how quiet and cool-running this notebook is given the demands I place upon it. Quiet and coolness are two very important factors for me. I think I've said enough and you can see how pleased I am with my purchase.

So let me close with this: You will not be disappointed if you buy this Laptop!!

  • "Great Laptop!!!!!!"

Pros Changable parts, easily "upgradable",and low cost for great hardware from ASUS.

Cons Battery life running games in full graphics.

Summary I can not be happier with the performance or the freatures it comes with.

  • "Fantastic totally rocking computer"
    on by Traxx1

Pros Everything. Too many things for me to list in 250 characters.

Cons Battery life not so great.. but what do you expect when you have a powerhouse computer.

Summary I love this machine. It is awesome. It does everything I need it to do and more. I have had Asus products for years, and maybe its just me, but I love the quality and the service they give me when I do have a problem, is second to none in my book. I know if you want to go out and spend around $5000 or so you can get a totally spec'd out gamming laptop that will get you to the moon and back in around 3.2 nano-seconds, but for me, you can't find a better laptop for the price. And as far as speed, I have placed all of the graphics on ultra and maxed out all the graphic specs for games like Mass Effect 3 and Crysis and not had a problem. Crysis 64 bit version does get alittle choppy in some parts when you nuke the graphics, but all in all, awesome preformance. I really like the improved keyboard as apposed to the G73 and the matte finish along with the anti glare screen is a welcome improvement. This laptop is big... but they have even managed to knock a little off of the weight compared to the G74 and G73. For most, this computer will be more computer than you will ever need, let alone even getting close to using it to its full capabilities.

I believe that Asus has put alot of thought not only into how this laptop looks and feels as far as the design of it goes, but they also put alot of thought into making a very fast, very stable system that, in my opinion, will make this product very viable in the distant future. With the way that Moore's law works, most computers are outdated within a year and considered to be darn near ancient after 2. I can tell you, in my opinion, that this computer will still meet most if not all of your computing needs years from now, despite Moore's law.

Some more of the things I like about this computer are: Anti glare screen. Full 1080p. quck response keyboard. Extremely well vented with little or no heat problems that I have noticed. Extremely fast processor with an equally fast graphics chip which are designed to work hand and hand with eachother. Well designed chasis. The system is extrememly stable, I have yet to ever see a blue screen that was so infamous in my other systemns. Has all of the expansion I will ever need with 4 USB 3.0, HDMI and a card reader. The memory is easily upgradeable on this model. They even placed the factory installed 8 gigs on the other side of the mother board so as to leave the easily accessable memory slots open to us to expand the memory. They even used ddr3 1600 memory modules. They included an extra caddy for upgrading your hard drive without having to order it from their website. And, you can RAID array them either to a RAID 0 for improved preformance cutting in half the time it takes to access and read/write on the drives. Or, for the safety concious, RAID 1 wich basically turns one of your hard drives into an exact mirror of the OS hard drive so that if one fails, you have everything backed up and the computer will keep on working as if nothing happend allowing you to change out the defective drive and keep on computing. The website and support you recieve from Asus is also outstanding in my book. I have had Dell, E machines, tashibas, sony's and HP's and trust me when I tell you, Asus' support, leaves them well behind.

Great product. Very well built, and designed. This computer rocks.

  • "Distinction between G75VW-AS71 and G75VW-DS71"
    on by Casteor

Pros Will provide my review soon.

Cons Will provide my review soon.

Summary CNET's review states that the G75VW-AS71 has a Blu-ray player for its optical drive... However, the model they reviewed must have been the G75VW-DS71.

According to Amazon, here are the specs for the two models:
The difference lies within the memory (16gb vs 12gb), storage (750gb vs 1tb), and optical drive (DL DVD+RW/CD-RW vs Blu-ray-Enabled, DL DVD+RW/CD-RW). This is for the AS71 and DS71 respectively.
