  • "An extraordinary machine"
    on by JohnCassels

Pros Large Screen, beautifully designed, user friendly OS, a plethora of ports and great features

Cons Stingy Warranty, keyboard positioned awkwardly

Summary I bought the Apple Powerbook G4 17" 1.5 GHz last July and so far it has offered uncompromised performance and functionality.
In terms of portability, the 17" Powerbook is most likely the most portable 17" laptop on the market. It's thin and light; however, it is a 17" laptop so there is not really a way for this computer to be designed to be more 'movable'. If you're someone who is going to be moving around a lot, be aware that it is a big machine (very thin though) and perhaps a 12" Powerbook might be more suitable.
Depending on your needs of the machine, the 1.5 GHz processor has handled all the tasks I have thrown at it wonderfully. However I am not a gamer or graphics designer etc. who is constantly running RAM heavy programs, so please keep that in mind.
The large 17" display is great for working on, as for most programs you can get two full sized windows open side to side and just look off both, rather than constantly switching back and forth. As well, for DVDs, the quality is simply amazing (if the screen is in reasonable condition). The pictures come out crisp clear and the color differentiation is great as well. The display is a definite strong point of this machine.
The functionality and ease of use of this machine is really a huge plus. Many keyboard shortcuts are available that allow you to do something as simple as switch programs up to spreading all your program windows across your screen in organized rows (this is the expose feature). As well there volume, screen brightness and keyboard backlighting brightness keys all on the keyboard.
Although this machine comes with a hefty price tag, I would highly recommend it.

  • "Amazing laptop"
    on by 199657710366057339589467585945

Pros plenty of screen real estate for most tasks, light weight for its size, bright screen, very attractive

Cons My clicker is difficult to press, but apple will replace it for free whenever I stop being too lazy to bring it in to the apple store.

Summary I use this laptop for video editing, making websites, and graphic design, and it handles everything without a problem. Big fan.

  • "Excellent! Superdrive is A DVD Burner!!!"
    on

Pros Great screen. I use products from the Windows and Apple worlds but I'm most happy with the Apple stuff. OS X Rocks!!!

Cons Pricey, yes. But you but you actually do get a DVD writer, unlike what the initial review says above.

  • "This is my 3rd Apple Computer"
    on

Pros Had the old Apple //c and Apple IIgs back in the day. Let me just say that if Mac-haters think their Windows machine is faster, that just means it will crash sooner (clock the reboot while you're at it - where did the speed go?). I've had this beautiful m

Cons Hey, it's not cheap. But, you get what you pay for, and if the choice is between headaches or money, I'll choose the latter.

  • "This laptop brought me back to Mac!"
    on

Pros The 17" 1440x900 screen Backlit keyboard is very useful Minimal fan nose even at full speed Aluminium case and 1" thickness Less than 7 pounds weight 1.5GHz G4 seems faster than my P4 3.2 GHz at work on MS Office and Dreamweaver MX Gotta love that Bluetoo

Cons The initial cost can put some people off a PowerBook but you get what you pay for, quality in spades! Apple charges about 2x the market price for extra memory.
