Description: The Acer Extensa 5620-6635 is a 6.4-pound, mainstream notebook computer. Compared to other mainstream consumer notebooks on the market, it is very inexpensive at around $675. Has Wi-Fi (wireless connectivity) built-in.
Pros: Comes with Microsoft Windows Vista business/ XP Professional downgrade and Microsoft Windows Vista OS, which is somewhat more favorable than some similarly priced notebooks. In fact, the typical cost of a product with a comparable set of OS is $1,420.
Cons: Has a 6.4-pound weight. Also, this notebook has only 1 GB RAM. This is not out of line with the product's price, but is less than the average notebook on the market today. The Acer Extensa 5620-6635 comes with entry-level word processing software -- serious business or academic document authors may want to upgrade to a full-fledged office suite . Shared video memory has a negative impact on system performance which may be okay for users with more modest graphics needs. Users with more demanding needs should look to a graphics solution that brings its own muscle.
Suitability: Suited for those who just need a basic notebook. Preserve favorite home movies for future generations by saving them onto DVD with this computer's DVD burner. If you have a wireless network at home, wirelessly browse the Internet from any room in your house with this Wi-Fi enabled laptop.
Value: In view of its very inexpensive price, this notebook has great features for the money. Generally, this economy-class model lacks “ooh-ahh” appeal, but budget-minded consumers will like the low price.
Suggestions: (1) Given this device's Wi-Fi capability, you may want to get a wireless access point for your home, so that you can browse the Web more conveniently from any room. (2) For help in deciding if this is the right computer for you, see CNET's buying guide for notebooks .
