Pros Outstanding value for an Intel i5 laptop. Sleek looks; ergonomic design; true widescreen shape; keys and touchpad are dream-worthy!
Cons Terrible sounding speakers, short battery life, creaking plastic sound not confidence inspiring
Summary First I must admit I do not have the exact model reviewed here. What I have is an Aspire 5741-3541 which costs $100 less, ($650!) and loses the nvidia graphics. It has the i5450M instead of the i5460M, and has Intel integrated graphic plus 128MB dedicated VRAM. Every other spec is identical to my knowledge. As stated above, I found the keypad to be one of the best, most comfortable of all the one I've sampled. And I find the multi gesture touchpad to be perfectly placed, perfectly sized, and perfect for 2 finger scroll, pinch and zoom, and I love the one button clicker, so the reviewer and I are on opposite sides of this issue. Obviously you should check this out for yourself and decide. There are some cheap feeling plastics that tend to creak if you hold the unit with one hand, especially by the optical drive. Not happy about that as it feels like you are squeezing the parts in the drive, so it feels fragile, but what laptop outside of a Panasonic Toughbook doesn't?
The bottom line of the bottomline is this: A very capable processor for a very low price=an outstanding value.
Pros its very fast loading pages, and i can have as many tabs open as i want...also i can have as many programs running as i want or need..
Cons i haven't found anything that i dont like..yet
"Horrible Laptop!"on by Kammierose
Cons Short battery life, EXTREMELY touchy mouse pad, cheap plastic design, and very slow performance.
Summary I just got this laptop 2 days ago and I am very displeased. I got it at a rental place so it is pre-owned. I can not have more than 2 programs open at once or it will shut one of them down. I purchased this mainly for school and I feel like it can hardly handle that. Another thing I've noticed, is that when I type I have to really press down on the keys. Not fun when you are trying to type fast.
I guess you get what you pay for.
Pros Great monitor, great sound, nice keyboard.
Cons Faulty hard drive when a few months old.
Summary Although covered under the warranty, they wanted $239 to repair it. My diagnostic program diagnosed it as a bad hard drive which was covered according to their guarantee, but even the supervisor informed me that it would be $239 to repair. Now I have a $600 paperweight. Don't buy an Acer!!!
Pros Durable. Lightweight. Sharp and vivid 15.6" screen. Simple. Easy to use. Large keyboard. Plenty of USB ports. Great DVD player. Decent battery life.
Cons Overly sensitive mousepad.
Summary I have owned Dell, HP, Alienware, and Gateway laptops, none of which live up to the success I have had with my Acer Aspire laptop. I absolutely love it. I've had it for almost a year and I don't recall it ever having crashed one time. One of the best qualities about the laptop is that it is lightweight compared to other 15.6" screened laptops. Don't let the plastic shell fool you, this laptop is also very durable after having been knocked around several times and dropped once. Still works like a charm. I highly recommend the Acer Aspire 5742, truly the best laptop money can buy.
