How to send a Square gift card

This holiday season, send a Square gift card for the local bookstore or coffee shop to a friend or family member. Here's how!

The ability send and process gift cards were recently added by Square as an additional service for its merchants. The process is simple, but requires you to download and install the Square Wallet app (iOS, Android) on your smartphone.

  1. Once you have Square Wallet installed you'll need to set up an account, complete with your payment information.
  2. You can then find a local store listed in Square Wallet, such as a coffee shop or bookstore, open the respective card for that business, and then tap "Send Gift Card."
  3. Enter the recipient's information, select an amount and delivery date, and then tap Next in the upper-right corner.
  4. Last but not least, select a digital envelope for the card to be delivered in.

The best part about sending a Square gift cards is that the recipient doesn't even have to own a smartphone. The recipient of the card will be able to add the gift card to their Square Wallet account, or print out the card (with a QR code) and redeem it at the local business. Square merchants can then use the Square Register app to process the gift card payment.

Here's a video to show you what the process looks like on an Android device:
