How to put 1Password in 'Demo mode'

Demo mode is an easy way to show someone how 1Password works without revealing your personal info.

1Password does a superb job at keeping your private information organized, and your online accounts safe with completely random passwords. Using Dropbox or iCloud, you're able to keep your payment information, private notes, and passwords in sync across multiple devices.

Late last year the 1Password iOS app was updated with a completely revamped look and new features, such as URL schemes and a feature called "Demo mode."

Demo mode is a convenient way to show someone how the app works without revealing any of your personal information during an impromptu tutorial. Once it's activated, you only need to enter a special password in lieu of your master password. To put the 1Password app into Demo mode, you'll need to enable the feature in Settings.

Launch 1Password, go to the Settings tab, then tap on Advanced. Toggle the switch to enable Demo mode and close the app.

Going forward anytime you want to show your friends how the app works without revealing any of your personal information, simply type "demo" into the master password field when you launch the app. Doing so will bring up a fake 1Password vault with random information, working just as it would if you're browsing your own vault. None of the app settings can be changed when the app is in this mode; feel free to hand over your device and let your friend or co-worker get a real feel for how the app works.

Demo mode shows just how much the developer of 1Password, AgileBits, takes your privacy into account when developing the app. Showing someone how the app works while exposing your personal information isn't a comfortable situation for either party.

You'll need to be using 1Password 4.0.2 or later in order for demo mode to be present. You can purchase the app for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch in the App Store for $17.99.
