Change this LinkedIn setting before starting your job search
Looking for a job is stressful enough without the potential of LinkedIn reading an edit to your profile as you landing a new job and then broadcasting the great (but false) news to your contacts.
If you are on LinkedIn, then you undoubtedly get those emails that implore you to "Congratulate so-and-so on the new job." Did you know that a simple change to your profile can result in LinkedIn -- like a proud but overeager parent -- broadcasting the news to all of your LinkedIn contacts as if you landed a new job?
Donna Sapolin, writing for Forbes, discovered that tinkering with your LinkedIn profile can lead to embarrassment when starting a job search. She changed her Professional Headline -- the title below your name on LinkedIn -- and suddenly was bombarded with congratulations from her friends and mother. Worse, Sapolin realized it could turn off potential employers, who mistakenly thought she was happily, gainfully employed.
After some back and forth with various LinkedIn employees, Sapolin was pointed to a single setting that will prevent LinkedIn from broadcasting the news of change in job or simply an edit to your profile.
To find it, click on the tiny thumbnail of your profile picture in the upper-right corner of LinkedIn. Next, choose Privacy & Settings.
On the Profile tab of the privacy page, click the link for "Turn on/off your activity broadcasts." Then on the small pop-up window, uncheck the box for "Let people know when you change your profile, make recommendations, or follow companies." In addition to stopping the potential for broadcasting false news about your employment status, disabling this setting, as LinkedIn points out, will also keep your current employer from receiving a notice about any new LinkedIn activity of yours you might not be ready to share.
