Netflix migrates to Canada
Canadians can now sign up for Netflix's streaming service at $7.99 per month. It is the company's first foray outside the U.S.
Netflix has crossed the U.S. border for the first time.
Canadians can now sign up for Netflix's streaming service at $7.99 per month. The service, which was announced in July, provides content from the major film studios, including MGM Studios, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, and Universal Pictures. The rental firm has also partnered with Lionsgate and several Canadian film distributors.
The service will also include television shows, including "Mad Men," "Rescue Me," and "Leverage." Netflix didn't provide an exact figure, saying only that "thousands of movies and TV episodes" are available on the Canadian service.
Netflix's service in Canada is limited to streaming content, which means Canadians still cannot get physical media from the online rental company.
As in the United States, Netflix's Instant Streaming is available on several devices. Right now, Canadians can access the content online, through some Blu-ray players, and via Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii.
Xbox 360 integration won't be available until "later this fall." The service is also available on Apple's iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Canadians will have access to the service on the new Apple TV when it launches in their country, Netflix added.
Canada is Netflix's first foray outside the United States, and perhaps the first move in what could be Netflix's strategy to look beyond U.S. borders for growth.
The company is offering a free one-month trial to start.
