Xpress 6.5 - has it corrupted yr eps file names?

by simoncroft / March 27, 2006 6:57 AM PST

This is a problem I had earlier this year - and ignored because I didn't realise it might come back to haunt me.

We hired a bunch of Apple G5s running OS 10.4 and our versions of Quark Xpress 6.5 for a daily newspaper we were producing from a convention centre.

When we came to run out the PDFs on day one and looked in Usage, we realised that almost all of the image file names/paths had been turned into total gibberish.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, can they let me know the specific system configuration?

We developed a work-around, which I'm happy to share if anyone wants it. I just wish I had recorded all the specifics at the time, so that we could get a meaningful response from Quark.

Would like to know what the work-around was.

The workaround

It's simple but it worked for us.

As you place each image file, write its name next to it on the pasteboard. That way, if you do experience corruption, at least you know which files you're supposed to be looking for in Usage.

Also, despite any urge to the contrary, do not save the file before you output to PDF. The file names only become corrupted when you save.

Light bulbs you shouldn't buy

There are plenty of dimmable LED light bulbs, but make sure you don't buy the ones that flicker when you dial them down.
