Won't start-just beeps

by Drjustsayno / May 13, 2006 3:55 PM PDT

My son's pc running Windows XP, won't start. When he pushes the power button, it only "beeps". Can you tell me if this means power supply is shot or something worse? Thanx.

BEEP MEANING

One short beep when No error during POST
displaying logo.

Long beep in an endless No DRAM installed or detected
loop.

One long been followed Vidoe card not found or video
by three short beeps card memory bad

High frequency beeps CPU Over heated
when system is working System running at a lower
frequency.

Try the following :

Open the side panel of the CPU. After earthing yourself by touching well grounded metal or the cabinet
box, pull the side button of the memory stick --> remove the memory stick (don't directly though the chipsets on it)--> clean the contact terminals with a clean eraser (very softly) --> push the stick in and remove it again 2 or 3 times to clean the inner contacts of the socket and finally fix it. Start the
computer and see if it helped.

If it didn't, then remove the video card and push it in and out 2 or 3 times and then try to start.

Hopefully, it may resolve your problem.

I missed to mention that after removing the side
panel of Cabinet, push start button to boot and
check if the CPU fan as well as the SMPS (Power supply Unit) and the extra cabinet fans are
working.
