Windows Vista Update Fails Repeatedly - Error 80200053

Hi guys.

First of all I searched the Internet with Google and found a few hits on various forums, but I didn't find a useful answer anywhere, so I'm now turning to the experienced users and moderators of cnet.

Since a while (maximum of 1 Month I guess), the same update keeps failing the installation process, always with the error 80200053. Other forum answers said it's a validation error, and that one should try to go to the validation page, validate Windows, and try to update again. I tried that, validation was "successful", still the same error.

I use Windows Vista Home Premium 64 Bit OEM edition, and in the past my updates never failed, not even a single one. I don't think my hardware has anything to do with it, it's strong enough to run most modern games on middle to high detail settings fluently. If you still think it might have, I will post my hardware on request.

I also tried a reboot, but that failed too. It's always the same: it says there's a new update available, it downloads the update, and then the installation fails with that error, and it wants me to try it again.

I hope you can somehow help me out with this. I first thought about contacting the Microsoft Support, that's the least they can do after the customer pays good money for their buggy Windows, but somehow there's always "a problem" with my product ID. No clue if that's because it's an OEM version or not (I read the article about Microsoft's confusing policy regarding OEM versions here on cnet), but in the end it's all the same; I have this problem, and it needs to be (or maybe just should be?) fixed. I'm not even sure if it's an important update or not, but with a bit bad luck it just might be a part that's necessary before I can install other important ones. But it just feels better to know your Windows is up-to-date and has the least possible amount of bugs remaining - and no annoying Windows Update button flashing in your task bar that you have to ignore.

Thanks, I can't really download with another machine since I don't have one here... but the first solution in the forum link you posted worked just fine for me. Installed without any problems or errors this time.

While I'm glad it helped, the hoops and hopping we do is getting a little old.
